Beloved cartoons and comics can be the inspiration for your next birthday cake design.
Cartoon cakes aren't just for kids. Even adults enjoy the nostalgia. Designing a cartoon cake is not as difficult as it looks. With some basic baking supplies, you can make a cartoon cake in the afternoon and make the birthday party one to remember. The base cake can be any flavor you choose, and you can make the cake from scratch or use a mix. Just remember to take pictures of the smiling faces when you bring out your beautiful cake. Instructions
1. Draw the basic cake design on a notepad. The cake design can be as elaborate you like. If you are new to cake decorating, keep the design to a single layer cake with frosting designs. If you have decorated cakes before or want to experiment, add as many layers as you like. Consider the final cake, complete with decorations, frosting and accessories in your design. Color the pattern in and make note of the different colors you will need.
2. Prepare the necessary frosting and fondant colors. Color before chilling. Work the food coloring in. For even coloring, work the food coloring or color paste in thoroughly. Sarah Farr, an artist, advises using edible frosting and ink for more intricate designs, particularly for clothing. Chill the frosting and fondant until needed.
3. Mark over the design with a bold marker in the basic shapes needed. Envision the pattern in squares, triangles, rectangles and circles. Bake the necessary number of cakes. For squares and triangles, you can bake a set of rectangular cakes. A single round cake with a single rectangle cake is generally sufficient for a bear or mouse torso. The bottom of the circle cake should be cut off, and the rectangle should be cut into a square. The cut-off pieces can be cut into the ears. For a rabbit, elephant, giraffe or similar cartoon cake, make a round cake and two rectangle cakes. The second rectangle cake will be used to make the ears, neck and trunk.
4. Cut the cake into the desired shapes with a sharp knife. Sandy Myers, a baker, advises freezing the cake the night before cutting it to prevent cake from crumbling or tearing away pieces of the cake. Place the cake shapes on the sideless cookie sheet or cake pan. Seal together and cover with butter cream frosting. Wrapping the cake in plastic wrap and freezing it again after cutting also prevents the frosting from tearing the cake.
5. Knead the fondant until soft. Roll out to desired thickness, approximately ¼ to ½ inch. Lay the fondant over the rolling pin and place over the cake. Smooth down the fondant, being careful not to make any creases until after the fondant is in place. Cut the excess away. For other simple shapes on the cartoon cake, color the fondant, roll out and place on the cake.
6. Fill the piping bag with frosting and pipe on details. Wash the piping bag and tips thoroughly in between colors to prevent smearing. Use small circular tips for details such as outlines, eyelashes, fur and whiskers. Use wavy tips for earrings, noses and necklaces. Use flat ,squared tips to highlight ears and fur. Use star tips for jewelry, flowers and eyes.
7. Place toothpicks in the cake to keep the plastic wrap from sticking to the frosting. Cover the cake with plastic wrap. Chill the cake before serving. Remove the toothpicks and plastic wrap before serving.
