Wedding Attire For Pets

Dress your dog in formal wear for your wedding.

Many people consider dogs to be part of their families, and they want their canine friends to share in their wedding days. Your dog can attend dressed like the bride and groom, the wedding party or a guest. Accessories, such as jewelry and ties, can complete the outfits.

Bride

Dress your dog in a bridal gown that can be a simple white sheath with a small ruffle or an extravagant, frilly gown with a long train. Even small dogs can handle trains up to 4 feet long. Although you can commission a custom gown to match the bride's dress, many ready-made gowns come in a variety of sizes and colors. Headpieces such as veils or bows complete the look. Pamper your pooch by painting her nails before the wedding.

Groom

Dog tuxedos also have a variety of choices. For the complete look, buy a full suit that completely covers the dog's body, and accessorize with a smart top hat. For a simpler look, buy a vest, which is basically a collar with a decorated bib, or a black and white bandanna. Finish the look with ankle cuffs in a color that matches the bridesmaid dresses.

Attendants

Buy bridesmaid dresses for your dog to match your wedding colors. A rhinestone necklace and matching leash can complete the look. For male dogs, try a vest or tuxedo tank in a complementary color scheme. Use less expensive bandannas instead, which often reflect the dog's role. These include "Dog of Honor" and "Best Dog." Frilly flower girl dresses are often pink, while most ring-bearer collars and shirts include a detachable pillow with ribbons to secure the rings.

Guests

Dress your pet a bit more casually if they are attending as guests. For male dogs, use a simple bow tie or neck tie collar. For female dogs, try a dress suitable for the season, such as pastels for spring or jewel tones for fall. A cute hat along with matching collar and leash might be best for dogs not used to wearing clothing. For the most inexpensive option, use bandannas in black for male dogs or a wedding color for female dogs. Some are available imprinted with "Invited Guest," so there's no question whether the dog should be at the wedding.

Considerations

Before spending too much money on wedding attire for your dog, consider your dog's personality. Many will bite or pull at clothing, or they might roll on the ground and destroy the outfit. Also, make an adult responsible for walking the dog down the aisle or caring for the dog during the ceremony. Most young children who serve as flower girls and ring bearers are not mature enough to stand still themselves, and cannot handle the additional responsibility of governing a dog's behavior.
