Party Outfit Ideas

Certain colors and styles of dress are appropriate for attending holiday parties.

While some people worry about what type of hostess gift to bring to a holiday party, others concern themselves with what's appropriate to wear. Often, holiday parties are major social events, so it's important to dress to impress in appropriate attire. By choosing the right clothing styles and colors, you're sure to make a fashionable appearance at your next holiday party.

Children

At the holidays, parents tend to dress little girls in elaborate dresses, and little boys in miniature suits. While these types of outfits work for holiday pictures, dress children in more comfortable clothes for parties. Dress girls in warm, solid-color tights and a knee-length dress with long sleeves. Alternately, have her wear a jumpsuit-type dress with a long-sleeved undershirt. A pretty ribbon or velvet hair bow will tie her look together. Boys--from toddlers to teens--will feel comfortable in dark-colored cotton or corduroy slacks and a long-sleeved sweater or button-down shirt. Layers are ideal for younger kids, such as babies, toddlers and preschoolers, since they tend to overheat while running around and playing. Appropriate holiday colors for boys include gray, brown, blue or green; for girls, cream, red, yellow or purple look festive.

Women

Keep the temperature in mind when choosing a holiday party ensemble; a December party in Texas would call for a much different outfit than the same party held in Minnesota. A classic little black dress is always appropriate for holiday parties, as is a knee-length cocktail dress. Sheer tights with a stylish pattern will add texture to most ensembles. If you plan to wear pants, pair straight-leg slacks with a tunic, vibrant cardigan or strappy top, if the weather permits. Clothing colors ideal for the holiday season include gold, silver, black, dark red, royal purple and cobalt. Mix and match gold and silver accessories, since both are holiday colors. When it comes to shoes, pick a pair of heels to pull your outfit together, such as a pair of ankle booties or closed-toe platform pumps. An appropriate holiday outfit would include a 3/4-sleeve black dress accented with thin silver and gold chains, cobalt blue snakeskin pumps, a cobalt blue sash or belt and some sparkly diamond stud earrings.

Men

Men can get away with dressing fairly casually for a holiday party. The only steadfast rule is to never wear jeans or T-shirts. Khaki slacks paired with a short-sleeve button-down shirt would be an appropriate casual holiday outfit. Or, pair a cardigan vest--if you have one--with your favorite long-sleeved, collared shirt. Most holiday parties are informal, so you need not wear a suit or dinner jacket unless specified by the host. Select clothing in any of the following seasonal color combinations: tan paired with emerald green, red or dark blue; black and gold; brown and dark red; or brown and teal.
