You can easily craft your own unique hair bows with ribbons, pearls and crystal beads. Flat backed rhinestones or glass cabochons add to the sparkle, or you can embellish your hair bows with vintage earrings, broaches or pendants. You can find supplies to make these ribbon hair bow designs at your local craft store.
Ribbon Strands
You can make a simple ribbon hair bow with a barrette from the craft store, 7-inch strands of 1/4- to 1/2-inch-wide ribbons, a hot glue gun and embellishments (such as flat backed rhinestones or vintage jewelry). Tie one end of the ribbon strands all the way across the top of the barrette, leaving a 1-inch tail that extends above the metal strip of the barrette. This will create a fluffy look for your hair bows. Glue your embellishments across the width of the metal strip of the barrette with a glue gun to give your hair bows added design interest and to cover the metal of the barrette completely.
Pearl Ribbons
Craft hair bows made with stands of pearl embellished ribbons tied onto a metal barrette. Cut ¼-inch-wide ribbon into 10-inch strips, enough to fit across the width of the hair bow. To thread the pearls onto the ribbon strips, cut a 6-inch strip of monofilament line and bend it into a loop. Thread one end of the ribbon through the loop in the monofilament line. Add the pearls over the ends of the line and then onto the ribbon. You can knot the ribbons just beneath the pearls to hold them in place. Add as many pearls as you like to the strands, just remember to knot the ends. Tie the ribbon strands onto the metal strip of the barrette so that the knot is in the back. Glue another pearl embellished strand, or two, across the width of your hair bow to cover the metal completely.
Crystal Beads and Ribbon
Another beautiful hair bow craft you can make with ribbon includes strands of crystal beads. You can string several 4- to 6-inch strands of 4mm crystal beads onto monofilament line and alternate the bead strands with ribbon strands across the hair bow. You'll need one top-drilled crystal bead for the end of each strand, but the others should have holes drilled in the center. Cut a 12-inch section of monofilament line and thread the top drilled bead to the center. Thread the remaining beads over both strands at once until you fill the strand, less two inches at the top. Tie the bead strands around the metal hair bow with the knots falling on the back side. Tie strands of ribbon between the crystal strands. You can also add beads to the ribbon strands the same way you added the pearls. Glue flat backed rhinestones or another strand of crystal beads across the top of the barrette to finish the hair bow.
