Begin A Chocolate Bouquet Homebased Business

Candy bouquet gifts.

Candy bouquets are a sweet alternative to sending flowers. Because of their uniqueness and mass appeal, they make great gift ideas. Starting a candy bouquet business from home can be an affordable and fun way to generate extra income or build a full-fledged business. Depending on your skill level and interest, you can make your own candies or you can buy pre-made candies and arrange them in a bouquet. Either way, a candy bouquet business is easy to start.

Instructions

1. Set up your business. Determine your business structure, such as a Limited Liability Company (LLC). Obtain insurance to cover your business, as home or rental insurance doesn't cover home businesses, including if a customer has a negative reaction to any of your candy bouquets. Get your business licenses and sales tax permits at your local city or county business office, and create a price list for standard and special order bouquets. Check with your local business office or health department about laws related to food businesses. Most places will allow you to run a home-food business as long as you keep your candy-making ingredients and equipment separate from your personal ones.

2. Obtain your candy supplies from a candy wholesaler. Check out places like Sugarcraft.com and GetSuckered.com. Items to buy include candy ingredients, molds, candy sticks, candies, wrappers, vases and other containers to hold the bouquet, ribbons and other decorative items. In some states, your sales tax permit will allow to buy these items without paying sales tax. Your local government business office should be able to tell you sales tax rules for your state.

3. Create sample bouquets for weddings, birthdays, Mother's day and other gift giving times. Use your samples to show the types of bouquets you offer. Take pictures of them to use for your marketing materials.

4. Market your candy bouquet business. Develop marketing materials such as fliers, brochures and business cards to promote your business. Focus on groups that will buy candy bouquets, such as individuals who ordinarily buy flowers. Target gift giving toward holidays such as Mother's Day, weddings and bridal or baby showers. Consider giving away lollipops with your business information on the stick or wrapper. Other marketing tactics include building a website, advertising and sending press releases to women's or crafts magazines.
