Puffy bows, with clusters of looped ribbon, make beautiful finishing touches on gift wrap, and they also make great bows for wedding decorations. Puffy bows work best with fairly stiff ribbon, such as wide gift-wrapping ribbon, but you can also make them with satin or grosgrain ribbon. You’ll also need a small piece of matching ribbon or bow wire to tie around the middle of the puffy bow and hold the loops together. You can find bow wire in many craft stores or online. Although puffy bows are fairy simple to make, it can take some practice to get them to look perfect.
Instructions
Tie a Puffy Bow
1. Wrap the ribbon around your hand, or cut a piece of cardboard about as wide as you want the bow to be. Wrap the ribbon around your hand or the cardboard about six times. (For a fuller bow, you can wrap the ribbon around a few more times.) This will make the loops even. Cut the end of the ribbon when you’ve completed the wrapping.
2. Remove the loops of ribbon from your hand or the cardboard, being careful to keep the loops neat.
3. Fold the loops of ribbon in half. Cut off the corners of the folded area, making sure you don’t cut the loops apart. This will make the center of the bow narrower and help the bow look full.
4. Unfold the loops. Tie a narrow piece of matching ribbon or bow wire tightly around the center of the loops, where you cut the notches. This will hold the bow together.
5. Grab the inside loop on one side of the bow, gently pull it out of the stack of loops and twist it toward you. Fluff out the rest of the loops on that side the same way, then fluff out the other side of the bow.
6. Adjust the loops so that the ribbon looks even and the puffy bow looks full.
7. Cut the ends of the ribbon at an angle, or cut V-shaped notches into the ends.
