Fabulous hairbows are an easy do-it-yourself craft.
Homemade hairbows are just the thing for customizing a little or big girl's wardrobe. Grosgrain ribbon comes in a variety of colors, widths and patterns and makes sturdy, beautiful bows that are easy to assemble and look like they came from a boutique. Create lush blossoms, bouncy bows of ribbon curls or simple, unfussy bows to match a casual dress.
Flower Bow
A bright, extravagant flower bow just takes colorful grosgrain ribbon, a hair clip, a thimble, needle and thread, and a glue gun. The trick is to make each successive series of ribbon loops for the flower petals about 1 inch shorter than the previous flower layer. Cut the ribbon lengths for the first layer of petals, stack them one on top of another and poke a needle through the center. Fan out the ribbons around the needle, fold each end back in a loop and push it onto the needle. Stitch through all the thicknesses of ribbon to form a layer of petals. Make several layers like this, each one successively smaller, and glue them together. Tack or glue a center ornament to the flower and glue the whole flower to the hair clip.
Simple Boutique Bow
A fancy bow that’s pretty uncomplicated takes a hair clip, glue, grosgrain ribbon and a bit of sewing. It’s so simple you may want one to match every outfit in the closet. The bow is made by looping grosgrain ribbon around itself at least four times, spreading the loops into a bow shape and taking one big gathering stitch in the center of the bow. Pull the gather tight, wrap the thread around the gathered spot several times and tie it off. Glue a piece of contrasting ribbon to the middle, gathered section, and glue the whole bow to an alligator hair clip. Make the bow with ribbon as thin as 3/8 inches wide all the way up to 1 1/2 inches. The smaller size is perfect for babies and can be glued or stitched to a soft gathered hair band instead of a clip.
Korker Bows
Wrap grosgrain ribbon tightly around a 1/4-inch wooden dowel. Use whatever length dowel will fit in your oven. Secure the ribbon at either end of the dowel with a wooden clothes pin. Make a number of these in matching or contrasting colors and prints. Bake in the oven on a clean cookie sheet for 25 minutes at 250 degrees to set the ribbon. Clip lengths of these curled ribbons -- korkers -- to make bows. For a 3 1/2-inch bow clip, use 25 or 30 3-inch korkers. Slip a piece of skinny elastic cord around the middle of the bunch and tie it in a loose knot. Adjust the korkers so they are fairly even and tighten the elastic cord. Wrap the cord one more time around the korkers and double-knot it. Glue the knot. Touch each ribbon end with Fray Check to keep it from fraying. Glue the korker bow to a hair clip, or tie and glue it to a hair elastic.
