Homemade gifts are a nice option for a one-of-a-kind present.
When it comes to finding the perfect birthday or wedding gift, most people want to find something special. Thinking outside the box can help you find the perfect gift for a friend. Look for one-of-a-kind items or find a gift that fits the recipient's personality. This way you're sure to give a memorable present.
Starter Kits
Create a starter kit with a theme for a gift. For example, if the friend or couple has an interest in cooking, set up a collection of cooking supplies. Use a large deep skillet as a creative basket alternative. Fill it with spices, sauces, pastas, rices and other base ingredients (nonperishable are best). Add in cooking utensils such as serving spoons, spatulas, pot holders, measuring spoons and cups. For an additional special touch, theme the kit to a particular style of cooking such as Italian, Thai or French. Be sure to include a recipe book for inspiration.
Etsy
Etsy is an online marketplace where people can sell items they've created such as artwork and jewelry or vintage items. The site is basically a treasure trove of original and one-of-a-kind gifts. Try Kristen Kemper who sells illustration artwork with inspiration from fairy tales and children's stories. LTCreatesJewelry (see Resources) creates bracelets, rings and other jewelry from old silver or pewter forks and spoons. And JessJamesJake finds some amazing vintage gift possibilities.
Personalized Coupon Book
It may sound like a cheesy gift from an 8-year-old to a mom, but with a little thought and creativity, a personalized coupon book can be a great birthday gift. This really makes a better birthday gift than a wedding option, though you can certainly find a creative enough way to make the book work for a wedding. Add coupons for free things, like a cup of coffee, a night out for drinks, maybe a friend's day. Then cover activities such as a bike ride, free babysitting or housecleaning. Try to theme your book around your friend and choose things that will show her you value your time together and fit her personality.
His & Hers
His and her gifts may seem predictable for a wedding gift so embrace the kitschy side of these gifts. Try giving salt and pepper shakers in character designs like Mickey and Minnie Mouse or Homer and Marge Simpson. Fun coffee mugs or pajama sets make great his and her gifts too. Beer glasses with his and her pictures on them are fun; you have them printed with the couple's faces or you could just imply the difference. For example, you could have skulls printed on them for a punk couple, but just have a bow on the girl skull.
