Hair bows can be expensive in the stores so try your hand at making your own. Making your own not only saves you money, but allows you to be creative and to make custom hair bows that can't be found anywhere else. There are many types of hair bow crafts, many of which can be combined to make even more unique hair bows.
Pinwheel Hair Bows
Using 1 1/2 to 2 inch ribbon, you can make a large hair bow in any color or design you wish. The ribbon needs to be approximately 24 inches long to make this type of hair bow. Make two large loops next to each other to begin making this bow. Then, you will pinch the center of the loops and secure with thin wire or string around the center of the bow. Adjust the loops so they are even and cut the ends of the ribbon to match on either side. To attach the bow you can choose any type of clip and glue it to the back of the bow.
Novelty Hair Bows
You can glue nearly anything onto a plain barrette to make a novelty hair bow. You can try balloons (deflated), pipe cleaners, ribbon, pom poms or even sequins. By using a variety of craft supplies you can make a hair bow that matches any outfit or is appropriate for any occasion. Be sure to use hot glue or supergule when adhering your items to the barrette so that they stay secure when they are worn. Consider buying small plain barrettes to make pairs of barrettes or matching barrettes for a group of friends.
Layering Hair Bows
Layering hair bows on top of one another can create an eye-catching hair piece and allow you to incorporate several colors into one bow. You can layer simple bows or pinwheel bows to create the layered look. Place two bows on the bottom, overlapping slightly and glue together. Place the third bow directly in the center of where the two bottom bows overlap and glue. Using a piece of small extra ribbon, you can wrap the three bows together covering up where they all overlap. Try using three different colored bows or three complementing colors and designs for the layered bow.
