Ribbon flower clips are attractive hair accessories.
Hair accessories are items that most women and girls with long hair appreciate. Ribbon flower clips are attractive for special occasions or for casual wear; they are also an inexpensive and simple gift to make for friends or family members for special occasions. Creating a ribbon flower clip is not an exact science. The lengths of ribbon needed varies depending on the size of the flower desired. The technique for making a ribbon flower clip can be mastered with a little practice.
Instructions
1. Cut an 18-inch piece of 1-inch wide satin, grosgrain or organza ribbon. This will make a rose that is approximately 4 inches in diameter. If you want to make a larger or smaller rose, cut the piece of ribbon longer or shorter.
2. A sewing machine makes the creation of a ribbon rose easier.
Adjust the tension on the sewing machine to make the stitches as large and loose as possible.
3. Sew along the entire 18-inch length of the ribbon at 1/2 inch from one edge or the other. When beginning to sew, make several stitches and then reverse the tension in the sewing machine to back over the stitches, securing them so they will not unravel. You can then continue sewing forward.
4. Remove the ribbon from the sewing machine. Pull the thread about 3 inches away from the sewing machine and then cut it. The extra thread length is needed to gather the ribbon.
5. Pinch the edge of the ribbon, with the extra length of thread hanging from it, between the thumb and forefinger. Gently, with the opposite hand, pull the thread, pushing the ribbon up the length of the stitches to gather it.
6. Gather the ribbon all the way to the very end; it will curl around as it gets smaller on the threaded side.
7. Shape and wind the gathered ribbon around itself to form a rose. Turn it over on your work area so the back-side faces you.
8. Cut a circle out of the felt large enough to cover the center of the bottom of the rose. Squeeze hot glue on the middle of the back of the ribbon rose and place the felt circle over it. Allow the glue to set completely.
9. A hot glue gun minimizes sewing.
Turn the rose back over, squeeze hot glue on the middle of the rose and place a large rhinestone over it. Allow the glue to set. Plastic rhinestones are available in packages containing many sizes and colors at craft or fabric stores.
10. Squeeze hot glue on the top of the barrette or hair clip and then place the rose on top of it with the felt circle attaching to the barrette.
