Create A Firecracker Balloon Tree

Star-shaped balloons create the look of an explosion.

Balloon trees are versatile decorations that work for any celebration, from Christmas to the Fourth of July. The trees are aptly named, as they consist of a "trunk" and "foliage" area made with balloons. The key to creating a fire cracker balloon tree is to turn the "trunk" area into the firecracker and the "foliage" area into the explosion.

Instructions

1. Measure and mark a 12-inch wide circle on a piece of plywood. Cut the circle from the wood using an electric jigsaw.

2. Stand a 2-inch wide wooden dowel at the center of the circle. Flip the dowel and circle over so that the plywood circle sits at the top of the dowel. Hammer a nail through the middle of the circle and into the dowel to secure the pieces together.

3. Flip the wooden tree frame over and set the circle on the table. Cover the circle and dowel with red spray paint and let it dry.

4. Fill two 260 balloons two-thirds full with air, so that each balloon measures 40 inches long. Tie a 5-inch-long tail on each balloon.

5. Twist both balloons at the halfway point. Twist the middle of the balloons together three times to create a "cross" shape. Place the middle "cross" area over the top of the dowel.

6. Pull each balloon half down to the plywood base, taping the two tied ends to the base. Pinch the tip of the round ends and tape the pinched latex to the dowel base. Wrap red ribbon around the base several times and tie it in a small knot to secure it. Remove any visible tape to finish the red "firecracker."

7. Select 16 to 24 star-shaped foil balloons to fill with helium. Mix assorted silver, gold, white, red and blue stars. Tie each balloon to a 28-inch-long piece of white ribbon.

8. Arrange the star-shaped balloons in an "explosion" spray shape, with some balloons floating high and others low. Pinch the balloon ribbons together and tie them in a large knot, leaving at least a 6-inch ribbon tail below the knot.

9. Push the tail ribbons aside and cover the bottom of the knot with glue. Press the knot onto the top of the "firecracker" base. Press the knot into the top for at least 60 seconds, or however long it takes the glue to dry. Arrange the short tail ribbons to stick out in all direction, like smoke floating from the top of a firecracker.
