Personalize your hair bows by using your favorite ribbon.
Hair bows are appropriate for girls of all ages and for many different occasions. The bows can be made to coordinate with a sports team, a holiday or special occasion, or made for everyday use. Create a hair bow specific to your style by selecting your favorite ribbon and making the bow yourself. By making your own hair bow, you can save money and brush up on your crafting skills.
Instructions
1. Cut a 22-inch long piece of your chosen 1 1/2-inch-wide ribbon. Hold a lit lighter to the ends of the ribbon for a few seconds to keep them from fraying. Fold the ribbon in half with any pattern facing out, and use a pencil to mark a line on the inside of the ribbon at the halfway mark.
2. Open up the ribbon longways, so the inside, or back, or the ribbon is facing up. Take the left end of the ribbon and loop it to touch the halfway mark. Make sure the patterned side of the ribbon in the loop is still facing away from you; you will have to twist the ribbon slightly to do this. Repeat the process with the right end of the ribbon and hold the ends together in the middle. The ribbon should make a figure eight shape.
3. Take the middle of the top loop in your figure eight, and pull it down to the center near the halfway mark, this time with the pattern side of the ribbon facing towards you. Do the same thing with the bottom loop of the figure eight.
4. Place a hair clip, such as the type found in hair salons, over the middle of the bow to hold it in place.
5. Cut an eight-inch piece of embroidery floss. Remove the clip from the ribbons, but use your hand to keep pressure in the center of the ribbons to keep the bow loops intact. Wrap the embroidery floss around the center of the ribbons and tie a secure knot.
6. Hot glue the back of the bow to the top of a barrette, or use another piece of embroidery floss to tie the bow to a hair tie. Allow the glue to completely dry before clipping the bow in your hair.
