Create A Dress From Duct Tape

No longer merely a useful home repair tool, duct tape has become a cultural symbol of thrift, often having a comical connotation. For this reason, creative and incongruous duct tape projects--such as duct tape clothing--make for a funky fashion statement. There are many ways to draft and build duct tape creations, but one of the best ways to make an easy duct tape dress is by using a real dress pattern. Use this method to make a duct tape dress of any size and style.

Instructions

1. Trim a dress pattern according to your size. (Clothing patterns contain several outer lines marked with the sizes; consult the pattern instructions if this is confusing).

2. Make paper copies of the dress pattern pieces. Trace the trimmed patterns on newsprint using pencil, then cut them out.

3. Coat the front sides of each pattern piece with strips of duct tap. Consult the instructions with the pattern to determine which side of each piece is supposed to face outward in the finished dress. Cover this side with strips of duct tape, laying them side-by-side and parallel. Lay each new strip slightly over the last one to avoid gaps. If you accidentally leave space between two strips of tape, add another strip to cover this rather than attempting to pull up and re-position any tape. Trim overlapping ends of tape to line up with the edges of the pattern. Place each piece flat on the ground or table as you're working to help you lay the tape as smoothly as possible and avoid creases.

4. Attach the duct tape pieces as if you were assembling the dress inside-out. Consult the instructions for assembly of the dress, but instead of sewing, attach the ends of the pieces using long strips of duct tape laid along the edges of the seams. Assemble all pieces, then turn the dress inside-out.

5. Finish coating the inside of the dress with duct tape pieces. Coat the inside of the dress with strips of duct tape just as you coated the outside, laying them side-by-side and slightly overlapping. This will create both strength and comfort in the dress's design. For best structural integrity, stagger the strips of tape so that many of them cross over seam lines.

6. Turn the dress right-side in. If the pattern calls for any buttons, snaps or zippers, hand sew them in place. You will not need to hem the duct tape material.
