Diy Monogram Invites

Create memorable DIY monogram invitations.

Many special events --from weddings and birthdays to first communions and baby birth announcements -- make use of design elements such as monograms. A monogram is a logo or motif of a full name, first or last names or initials -- or some combination of these -- of the person or people doing the inviting or announcing. With a little imagination and basic word processing software, you can design a monogram. From there, you can make your own invitations.

Instructions

Design the monogram

1. Write down your monogram ideas and sketch a few designs. These will vary depending on the type of invitation. For example, to design a wedding monogram, draw one with your first names and last initial, one with your first and last initials and one with just your first names. In each case, include the wedding date. You can write this out in long form -- for instance, "June 1, 2011" -- or in a more modern, digital style, such as "6.1.11." You can also try these design ideas for a monogram of one person's name, such as for a birthday or birth announcement. Choose the sketched style you like best.

2. Open your computer's word-processing program. When a blank document opens, type the words or initials in the style you chose.

3. Highlight your text by holding down the mouse button with your pointer finger. Release your finger, then click on "Format" toward the center of the top menu. Select "Font." Choose the font style you like best.

4. Play around with font sizes, styles and colors. You don't have to have the same look for all the elements of your monogram. You can even add colors or appropriate graphics using your word processor's clip art or your own image saved on your computer. To move elements around easily, draw text boxes and insert each element into its own box. For example, for a monogram consisting of a first name, last name and middle initial, put each element in its own box. This way, you can move the text anywhere on the page to create the design you want.

5. Save your final monogram design to your computer, giving the file a name.

Create the invitation

6. Select your event theme or colors. This will lay the foundation for your DIY monogram invitations. Sketch the design of your invitation to use for assembly reference.

7. Buy your papers, embellishments and craft supplies.

8. Work assembly-line style. Design the wording of your invitations, reply cards and any other worded components of the invitation. Print everything that needs printing, then cut everything that needs cutting. Move on to gluing everything that needs gluing and allow it to dry overnight.

9. Monogram your outer envelopes also, if you so choose. Move on to stuffing the envelopes, addressing and mailing them.
