Make permanent corkbow ribbons for hair and home decor accessories.
Corkbow ribbons are also called korker bows, curly bows and curly ribbons. These whimsical ribbons are made by creating permanent spiral tendrils using grosgrain ribbon. Attach corkbow ribbons to a hair clip or a headband to create a designer accessory for your favorite little girl. Attach corkbow ribbons to a floral stem to enhance a decorative centerpiece for your next event. The corkbow ribbon technique looks more complicated than it is; with a little patience and the right supplies, you can easily make these colorful, swirling accents.
Instructions
1. Cut a 30-inch length of 3/8-inch wide grosgrain ribbon. Any type of polyester ribbon will work to make corkbows. Cut as many lengths of ribbon as you need to create your project. Twenty corkbow ribbons will make a full hairbow.
2. Spray fabric stiffener onto a length of ribbon. Clip the end of the stiff ribbon to the end of a 12-inch long, 1/2-inch diameter dowel. You can use a wooden clothes pin to clamp the ribbon in place.
3. Wrap the ribbon around the length of the dowel in a tight spiral. Do not overlap the edges. Use another wooden clothes pin to clamp the end of the ribbon to the end of the dowel.
4. Cover a baking sheet with tin foil. Place the wrapped dowel on the baking sheet.
5. Repeat Steps 1 through 4 to make additional corkbow ribbons.
6. Preheat the oven to 275 degrees. Bake the ribbon-wrapped dowels for 15 minutes. Remove them from the oven and test one for the desired curl. If the curl is too loose, continue baking for up to 10 minutes. Remove the baking sheet from the oven.
7. Let the ribbons cool completely. Remove them from around the dowel. Cover each end of each corkbow ribbon with fray check.
