Dress Such As The Figures On Mad Males

Sixties men wore suits in sober colors.

The popularity of "Mad Men," a dramatic television series created by Matthew Weiner, can be largely attributed to its aesthetic appeal. Set in the 1960s, "Mad Men" is a masterpiece of 60s interior design and popular fashion. Suits, shoes, hats, skirts, blouses, dresses and accessories long forgotten have been brought back to mainstream attention. If you want to dress like the characters of "Mad Men" without breaking the bank, you will have to scour vintage and thrift stores, and choose wisely for style and fit.

Instructions

Men

1. Measure your chest, back and waist with a tape measure. Unless you plan to have a suit tailored, it is important that the suit jacket, vest and pants you find at a thrift store have a slim fit. Without a slim fit, you will not achieve the 60s look.

2. Purchase pants that fit your waist exactly and have narrow bottoms. If you have a 30 inch waist, buy 30 inch pants. The bottoms of your pants should be no more than 17 inches wide. Do not buy pants with pleats or other articulation.

3. Purchase a two or three button suit jacket in a sober color, such as gray, dark blue and black. Men in the 60s rarely wore suits outside of these colors. The lapels on the jacket must be narrow to match the trim suit pants. Fit the jacket to your chest and back measurement. There should be little wiggle room in the jacket. You should be able to stretch your arms forward without straining the material of the jacket, but no more than that.

4. Purchase a white dress shirt with a narrow collar. Purchase a black, gray or dark blue skinny tie.

5. Purchase black or dark brown dress shoes, such as Oxfords. Wear them with black dress socks to finish the look.

Women

6. Measure your chest, stomach and waist with a tape measure. Sixties women's fashion is much more varied than men's, but was typically form fitting. Sixties women's clothes also look flattering on a variety of body types.

7. Decide whether you want to go for the female suit, miniskirt, long dress or short dress look, and whether you want to go for plain colors or prints. Women in the 1960s wore everything from sober colors to psychedelic patterns.

8. Purchase a suit with a square, boxy jacket and oversized buttons. These suit jackets often came with a matching skirt. Wear a white shirt underneath and solid colored, modest heels. You can accessorize with a lampshade hat.

9. Purchase a miniskirt introduced into the fashion scene by Mary Quant. These skirts come to mid-thigh and are modestly form fitting, rather than skintight. Purchase a shirt with a circular collar and knee-high boots to finish the look.

10. Purchase a dress that articulates the natural curves of a woman's body. These dresses allow room for the chest, come in at the waist, expand again around the hips and come in again at the thighs. Look for highly articulated collars on your dresses. Bows, wide lapels and ribbons were often seen around the collar of dresses in the sixties.

11. Purchase accessories to complement your look. Appropriate accessories for a sixties look include wrist-length white gloves, pearl jewelry, gingham print headbands, clutch purses and wide, brightly colored waist belts.
