If you're a guy looking to dress as a TV character for Halloween, you have many choices at your disposal. Whether you want to create a costume on your own or buy a ready-made costume from a physical or online costume shop, put away your boring football jersey and dress up as one of these guys.
Cartoons
If Fred Flintstone is your man of choice, you will need black hair, orange and black coat with collar, matching cuffs and blue necktie. With blond hair, brown coat with fur trim collar and matching cuffs, you can be Fred's best pal, Barney Rubble, or opt for his son, Bamm-Bamm, with white hair, orange and black spotted vest, muscle chest, matching cap, and brown shorts. All Bedrock men require bare feet shoe covers (which is safer than actually going barefoot).
If you want to be the patriarch of "The Simpsons," don a Homer Simpson mask, white shirt and blue pants. To be son Bart, get his mask and wear a red shirt and blue shorts (a plastic posterior is optional if you want to drop your shorts and moon people as Bart does).
You may want to collect some Scooby Snacks on Halloween, so you could be Scooby-Doo or Mystery Machine cohort Shaggy (make sure you have goatee, green shirt and brown pants) or Fred (blond hair, orange scarf, white shirt and blue pants). Perhaps you want to be another classic canine--try Snoopy or members of his Peanuts gang, such as Charlie Brown or Linus (don't forget that blue blanket).
If outlandish animation suits you, there are masks for Peter Griffin and son Stewie (plus red and yellow jumpsuit) from "Family Guy," or channel your inner "South Park" kids: identified by head attire, you can choose from Cartman (blue and yellow), Kyle (green), Kenny (camel) or Stan (blue and red).
Classic TV
Two classic sitcoms that are tailor-made for Halloween costumes are "The Munsters" and "The Addams Family." You can be Herman Munster (with mask or make-up, brown jacket, shirt and pants), or you can be son Eddie (with greased back black hair and gray-white make-up, brown jacket, white shirt, bow tie and short pants). If you want to be the family patriarch, Grandpa Munster requires mask or greased up hair and gray-white make-up, black jacket, gray vest, white dickie, medallion and pants.
If you have ruled out crossing gender lines by dressing as Morticia Addams, you have either Gomez or Uncle Fester as viable Addams Family costume options. Make sure you have a mask, black hooded robe and rope cord belt for Uncle Fester, or a purple and black striped jacket, shirt, bow tie, matching pants, cigar and moustache for Gomez.
Few character styles are as distinct as Ralph Kramden and Ed Norton on "The Honeymooners." You can be either character as a lodge member, complete with raccoon hat and jacket, or you can represent either in his classic uniform. Make sure you have a hat, jacket, pants and lunch pail for bus driver Ralph, and hat, shirt and pin stripe vest for sewer worker Ed.
If you want to be classic TV's ultimate cool guy-- "The Fonz" from "Happy Days"--throw on a white t-shirt, leather jacket and blue jeans, grease your hair, stick your thumb up and utter your best, "Ayyy."
Science Fiction and Superheroes
If you want to go where lots of men have boldly gone before, don some "Star Trek" attire. For the classic James T. Kirk look, wear a long-sleeved red shirt with the Star Fleet emblem, and make sure it has three gold bands on the sleeves' cuffs. For Mr. Spock, make sure it's a blue shirt and that it has two gold bands on the cuffs. To get even more into the characters, find official masks or buy a Spock wig and ears.
Costumed crime fighters are perfect for Halloween dress-up. You can be Superman (traditional or reversible format, so you can change from alter ego Clark Kent into the Man of Steel), Batman, Robin, Spider-Man (red or black) or The Incredible Hulk, among others. You can get most of today's superhero costumes in original style or equipped with muscle chest (if you lack the real thing).
