Make Homemade Hairbows

Ribbon bows are often used as embellishments for hair accessories.

They say a woman can never have too many accessories. If this is the case, then the money spent on store-bought accessories can quickly add up. Women who enjoy crafting can save money by making their own accessories. While constructing a pair of shoes or a belt at home may not always be feasible, most hair accessories can be made from basic crafting materials. Homemade hair bows that compliment a variety of outfits and styles are no exception.

Instructions

1. Unravel some ribbon from a spool but do not cut off a piece yet. Take one end and crisscross it over another spot on the ribbon. Form a loop in the desired size by holding the two pieces in place between your thumb and index finger.

2. Place a piece of masking tape to mark the spot where the two pieces intersect. Undo the loop.

3. Use a ruler to measure the length from the tip of the ribbon to where the tape is positioned. Double this measurement and add another 4 or 5 inches to it. Use scissors to cut a piece of ribbon that corresponds to this total measurement.

4. Use the two ends of the piece of ribbon to tie a knot. At first, keep the knot loose so that you can move it to the center of the ribbon. Tighten the knot once you have achieved the ideal positioning.

5. Form loops from the halves of ribbon on either side of the knot. Each loop should mimic the size of the temporary loop you made in Step 1. The remainder of the ribbon on each side should form a tail measuring approximately 2 inches. Aim to keep the sizes of the loops and tails on both as similar as possible.

6. Prevent the loops from coming undone by holding them between your thumb and middle fingers. Pass one loop behind the other. Move the thumb holding the loop you crisscrossed and use it to hold the two loops together at the base. Use your index fingers and thumbs to maneuver the two loops and tie them into a bow.

7. Secure the bow with a tight double knot.

8. Use the glue gun to dispense a drop of glue onto the knot in the bow. Press the knot against the middle of the barrette base, and press on it with your finger for several seconds. Smooth out the loops to remove any wrinkles. Give the bow approximately 30 minutes to dry before wearing it.
