Make Boutique Bows With Spikes

The bifurcated, spiked ends of a ribbon are just as integral to many hair bows as the loops that sit atop them. The spiked finish to the ribbon adds texture and increases a bow's visual appeal. You can create a bow with many spiked ends by layering a collection of spike-finished ribbon pieces with a complete bow. This technique is much quicker and simpler than trying to tie multiple ribbons into one large bow.

Instructions

1. Trim the ends of all four pieces of 6.5-inch-long ribbon to create the spike ending. Cut a 1-inch-long V-shape into each end. Each piece should remain 6.5 inches long, from spike point to spike point.

2. Seal the trimmed edges with no-fray adhesive. Dab the adhesive along each edge.

3. Lay the four pieces of ribbon on your work surface. Arrange them in an X-shape. Cross them at a common center point. Fan the ends so that they are all visible. The arrangement should loosely resemble an hourglass shape, with spiked ends at the top and bottom.

4. Cut a 48-inch piece of thread. Thread it onto the needle halfway. Fold the thread over to make a 12-inch double thread. Tie the ends in a knot.

5. Pick up the ribbon arrangement carefully. Hold it in the middle, where all four pieces overlap. Position the threaded needle under the ribbon, pointing straight up.

6. Push the needle through all four layers of ribbon at their common center point. Pull the thread taut. Stitch back through all of the ribbons to return to the underside. Make four more stitches.

7. Wrap the thread all the way around the center of the stitched ribbons. This will create gathering and puckering at the center of the bow.

8. Tie off the thread on the underside of the ribbon. Trim the excess thread with scissors. Tie a knot at the end of the threads and set the needle aside.

9. Pick-up the 13-inch piece of ribbon. Overlap the ends roughly 1 inch to form a loop. Pull the middle of the loop down on top of the overlapped section to form a bow with two loops.

10. Position the threaded needle under the ribbon, pointing straight up. Push the needle into the ribbon to stitch the overlapped ends and center of the loop together. Pull the thread taut. Stitch back through all of the ribbons to return to the underside. Make two more stitches.

11. Wrap the thread all the way around the center of the stitched ribbons. Tie off the thread on the underside of the ribbon. Trim the excess thread with scissors. Tie a knot at the end of the threads.

12. Place the looped bow on top of the spiked bow. Line up the gathered center points. Position the threaded needle under the ribbon, pointing straight up.

13. Push the needle into the ribbon to stitch the bows together. Pull the thread taut. Stitch back through all of the ribbons to return to the underside. Make two more stitches. Tie off the thread on the underside of the ribbon. Trim the excess thread with scissors.

14. Apply a dime-sized dollop of hot glue to the underside of the bow. Press the bow into the top of the French pinch barrette. Let the glue dry thoroughly before wearing the barrette.
