Crochet With Mylar

Use 3/16-inch mylar ribbon just like yarn when crocheting.

Mylar is a term given to film made from polyester resin. Typical Mylar products include balloons, wrapping paper and ribbon. Crocheting is done with the 3/16-inch mylar ribbon. The ribbon is found in widths from 3/16 to two inches. It is used for bows, hair ties, garden decorations, table centerpieces and other craft items. Crochet Mylar ribbon with a G to J crochet hook. All crochet stitches are done in the same manner as using yarn. Make a sample two inch square from Mylar ribbon using a Size G crochet hook.

Instructions

1. Tie a slip knot three inches from the end of the Mylar ribbon. A slip knot is tied by crossing the ribbon three inches from the end and leaving a 1 1/2 to two-inch loop. Insert your thumb and forefinger through the loop. Pinch the long piece of Mylar ribbon attached to the spool. Pull the Mylar ribbon through the loop. Pull the three-inch end of the Mylar ribbon tight. A slip knot is made.

2. Place the slip knot over the end of the crochet hook. Pull the long piece of Mylar ribbon to adjust the size of the loop on the crochet hook. The mylar ribbon should move easily on the shaft of the crochet hook. Push the Mylar ribbon up the crochet hook approximately 1/2 inch.

3. Chain 31 stitches. Loop the Mylar ribbon attached to the spool over the end of the crochet hook. Pull the loop through the loop on the shaft of the crochet hook. The first chain stitch is made. Repeat the process for a total of 31 stitches.

4. Position the tail of chain stitching so it points to the left, to the right if you are left-handed. Single crochet across the length of the chain for a total of 30 stitches. Skip the first chain. This is the first stitch to the row. Insert the tip of the crochet hook in the top loop of the second chain stitch from the hook. Loop the Mylar ribbon over the crochet hook. Pull the Mylar ribbon through the loop. Two loops of Mylar ribbon will be on the shaft of the crochet hook. Loop the long piece of Mylar ribbon over the crochet hook. Pull the loop through the two loops on the shaft. A single crochet stitch is made. Repeat the process for a total of 30 stitches.

5. Chain one stitch. Turn the crocheting so it points to the left, to the right if you are left-handed. Single crochet in the top of the second stitch from the crochet hook. Single crochet across the length of the crocheted Mylar ribbon for a total of 30 stitches.

6. Chain two stitches. Turn the crocheting so it points to the left, to the right if you are left handed. Double crochet in the top of the second stitch from the crochet hook. To make a double crochet, slide the loop on the crochet hook up the shaft approximately 3/4-inch. Loop the long piece of mylar ribbon over the shaft. Insert the tip of the crochet hook through the top loop of the second stitch from the crochet hook. Wrap the long piece of Mylar ribbon over the hook. Pull the loop through the top loop of the second stitch. Three loops are on the hook's shaft. Wrap the long piece Mylar ribbon around the end of the hook. Pull the loop through the first two loops on the shaft. Wrap the long piece of Mylar ribbon around the hook. Pull the loop through the remaining two loops on the shaft. A double crochet is made.

7. Repeat Steps 5 and 6 for a total of 10 rows. Complete the last stitch of the 10th row. Cut the Mylar ribbon three inches from the hook. Pull the cut piece of ribbon through the loop. Pull the end of the ribbon tight to form a knot. Weave the two three-inch ends along the edges of the crocheted Mylar piece to hide.
