Small lengths of ribbon are combined to make spiked hair bows.
Create your own hair bows with ribbon spikes for pageant wear, cheerleading hair accessories or for everyday use and save a bundle of money. Spiked bows for these types of events can be costly. With a few common sewing supplies and some ribbon to match your outfit of choice, you can create a spiked hair bow in under 10 minutes.
Instructions
1. Cut eight 4-inch lengths of ribbon in three colors -- four in one color, two in each of the other two colors. Fold each end of the ribbon and snip a triangle off from the folded edge toward the open end of the folded ribbon to create a fishtail effect on each end.
2. Wave each end of the ribbon over the open flame of a lighter to heat seal the ends and prevent fraying. Do not hold the ribbon over the flame long enough to burn it, only to melt it slightly.
3. Thread the sewing needle and tie both thread ends together in a knot. Press the sewing needle through the center of a piece of card stock so the needle is on one side and the thread is on the other. Secure the thread on the back of the card stock with a small piece of painter's tape.
4. Tape two edges of the card stock to your work surface using painter's tape, which prevents sticky adhesive from getting on your work surface.
5. Fold the piece of ribbon in half lengthwise and press the center of the ribbon pieces onto the needle that is sticking up from the card stock. Use an ordered pattern when positioning the colors of the ribbon. For example, if you chose to use yellow, white and black for your ribbon colors, an option for ribbon order is: two yellow pieces, one white, one black, another black, another white and two more yellow ribbon pieces.
6. Press the folded ribbon pieces down as you go to avoid the ribbons popping off the needle. Remove the tape from one end of the card stock and from the thread on the back.
7. Pull the thread through the hole in the card stock made by the needle and wrap the thread around the center of the ribbon spikes three or four times. Press the needle through the center of the ribbon spikes again to secure the ribbons in place.
8. Cut two more pieces of ribbon measuring 8 inches each from two of the colors. Lay each ribbon on the work surface, decorative side down and fold the ends to the middle and overlap them by 1 inch in the center.
9. Press the ribbon center onto the needle and thread. Repeat with the other piece of ribbon to create a two-tiered bow frame. Wrap the thread around the bow again three times and press the needle through the center of the ribbon spikes and the bow loops. Cut the thread close to the ribbons and put the needle away.
10. Cut one final piece of ribbon in the third color measuring 5 inches in length. Tie a loose knot in the center of the ribbon and adhere it to the center of the ribbon with a dab of hot glue. Turn the bow over, thread a ponytail holder onto one end of the ribbon knot and secure the ends together with the hot glue gun. Use caution not to glue the ponytail holder.
