Flattering Swimsuits For Physical Structure

There is a bathing suit for every body type.

Bathing suit season is a scary time for many women, as they aren't quite ready to bare it all on the beach or beside the pool. Confidence is key, because if you feel like you look great, other people will pick up on it. Choosing a bathing suit that complements your body type can go a long way toward making you feel good about removing that cover up and getting some sun.

Pear Shape

The pear shape is sometimes called the triangular body shape. Pear-shaped women carry more weight on the bottom half of their body, which can be one or two sizes larger than their upper body. If you consider the size of your bottom half a problem, look for a swimsuit that gives you a more proportional look by using not only style, but color and pattern as well. Busy patterns draw more attention, so consider a darker, solid color for your bottom. A strapless, bandeau style top can create more volume on the top. If you're concerned about showing too much on the bottom, choose boy shorts or a skirt.

Apple Shape

Also known as the inverted triangle, the apply shape is characterized by large chests, broad shoulders and narrow hips. The goal for apple-shaped women is to minimize the top half of the body and create more volume on the bottom. A strapless top likely won't give you enough support or coverage, so look for a halter or underwire option. As for the bottom, smaller bottom pieces can give you a more proportional look. Also, consider buying a darker top and a lighter-colored bottom. For example, wear a black and white polka-dot bathing suit--white with black dots on the bottom and black with white dots on the top.

Rectangular Shape

Rectangular-shaped women have a straight up-and-down figure, meaning their shoulders and hips are about the same size, and they don't have a defined waist. Many different bathing suit styles work for this body shape, but the goal is to create a more defined waist. Bottoms and tops with ruffles or bows add volume and make the waist appear smaller. Tankinis or one-piece suits with belts also help define the waist.

Hourglass Shape

The hourglass shape has traditionally said to be the most desirable female form. Women with hourglass bodies have proportional busts and hips and defined waists. Women with this shape can get away with almost any type of bathing suit. A bikini is great for this type because it shows off both bust and hips. If you feel you need to cover up a bit more, try a halter-style tankini that will show off your small waist.
