Instructions For Folded Ribbon Animal Hair Bows

Many fancy children's boutiques are stocked with beautiful hair ribbons of all shapes and sizes. These accessories, usually handmade, are fairly pricey. You can make your own hair ribbons for a fraction of that cost. These folded ribbon animals are a fun craft project for you and your little girl. You can save them for her, or sell them to family and friends. To make these hair bows, all you need are plain metal hair clips, ribbon, needle, thread, a small piece of felt and a hot glue gun.

Bunny Face Barrettes

To make a bunny face, cut a length of ribbon approximately 2 yards long. Cut a small circle about the size of a quarter out of your felt. The bunny will be constructed from one long piece of ribbon starting at the left ear, winding around the face and finishing with the right ear. Using the glue gun, secure one end of the ribbon to the upper left side of the circle where the ear meets with the head. Loop the ribbon up and around making a small ear and double backing to the base again where you will use more glue. Next, bring the ribbon down to the center of the circle and glue it in place. Twist the ribbon around and around so that the length of it is in spirals. Fill the circle with glue. Wind the curled ribbon around in a spiral, beginning from the center of the circle all the way out to the outside of the circle. Loop another ear on the right side of the bunny's head. Glue the bunny head to a metal barrette.

Catterpillar Barrettes

You can also make a ribbon caterpillar. Glue a piece of green ribbon onto the surface of your barrette. This will be the grass. Use approximately 20 inches of ribbon for your caterpillar. Starting at one end, sew a straight line of even stitches all the way down the length of your ribbon, in the center. When you reach the other end, carefully pull the needle and the ribbon will bunch up on itself. Cut the needle off and secure the thread. The ribbon now appears to look like a caterpillar. Glue the caterpillar onto the prepared barrette.
