Make a bow reminiscent of vintage hairpieces.
If you're enamored of sweet, vintage styles, treat yourself of a loved one to a homemade, floppy hair bow. Floppy hair bows featuring feminine fabrics and designs, such as flowers, were especially popular throughout the 1920s. Create floppy, old-fashioned hair bows with a modern twist by combining vintage fabrics with the convenience of fabric-covered headbands. Make a bow to match each of your favorite outfits, or just one bow, to wear on special occasions.
Instructions
1. Choose vintage, floral-inspired or antique lace fabric. Cut two 20- by 3-inch strips of fabric and one 2- by 3-inch strip of fabric using sewing scissors.
2. Place the two larger fabric strips on top of each other with their wrong sides facing each other. Trim the ends of the fabric diagonally to form the bow's tails. Use a needle and embroidery thread to sew all four sides of the fabric strips together.
3. Set the 2- by 3-inch strip of fabric in the center of the longer strip. Pinch the middle of the bow together accordion-style, and secure it together using a small, vintage pin or brooch.
4. Place a dab of hot glue on the back of the bow and press it onto a fabric-covered headband. Position the bow so it will sit slightly off-center, not on the top of your head.
