Headbands and hair bows are all the rage with mothers of new baby girls, not just to avoid the dreaded question, "Is it a boy or a girl?" but because hair bows for babies are absolutely adorable and can be easily made with a few materials lying around your house.
Options
Before throwing yourself into the sewing room and tying yourself up with ribbon, decide the type of headband you would prefer. There are several options, including woven, crocheted, lace or solid colored. There are ready-made headbands that can be custom decorated, or you can choose to make your own by crocheting or weaving, for example. Some headbands are plain, while others have a place to attach bows on alligator clips.
Materials
Almost any material can be used to make a headband: stretchy cotton, lace, ribbon, or elastic. Decorations include bottle caps, buttons, corkscrew ribbon, faux flowers, lace, chiffon, feathers, hearts and stars, and glitter. Special items like pearls, antique earrings, and old jewelry give headbands a custom touch. Bows are held to no-slip alligator clips using hot glue or superglue. Zebra and leopard print are favorites, as are sports teams logo decorations on bows with matching team colors.
Elastic Headband
Elastic is the easiest material to make a headband. When using elastic, first, cut the elastic using an elastic chart or by measuring your child's head with a measuring tape. Use those measurements subtracted by a half, and that is the size needed for the elastic. The key is to hide the 'ugly' side that shows the elastic. Thread your needle and stitch across the elastic where the two ends touch, about 1/8-inch from the end.
Crochet Headband
A crocheted version can be made by more skilled crafters. Some of the crocheted headbands are four double crochets up to six double crochets wide, referring to the thickness. The elasticity comes from crocheting a narrow width and doing many rows, instead of crocheting only three or four very long rows.
