There's nothing cuter than a large bow placed on top of your baby girl's head. Even if she doesn't have enough hair to hold in a clip, she can still wear a girlie hair bow with the help of a headband. Make your own hair bows and headbands to embellish any outfit in her closet. Your homemade bows and headbands will cost you a fraction of what store-bought ones would, and will take you less than an hour to construct.
Instructions
Headband
1. Cut off both legs of the baby tights. Set one leg aside. Cut a 3-inch section from the other leg. Line up the ends of the section and sew them together with a 1/4-inch seam allowance to form a small ring. Flip the ring inside out so the seam allowance is on the inside.
2. Slide the small ring you made onto the other leg of the tights. Line up the toe end and the cut end of this leg. Sew the two ends together with a 1/4-inch seam allowance.
3. Turn the seam allowance to the inside of the head band. Slide the ring over the seam allowance with the seam on the inside of the headband.
Bow
4. Trim the ends of your ribbon at a 45-degree angle. Heat the cut ends with a lighter.
5. Lay out the strip of ribbon on your work surface horizontally with the wrong side of the ribbon facing up. Fold the last 2 1/2 inches on the left end of the ribbon over toward the right.
6. Fold the last 8 1/2 inches on the right side of the ribbon over toward the left. Pinch the ribbon between your thumb and index finger to hold together all the layers in the center as you pick it up.
7. Continue to wrap the tail of ribbon that is left around the loop of ribbon you began with the first two folds. Stick a straight pin through the center of the loop once you are done to hold all the layers together.
8. Fan out the individual loops from your loop of ribbon to form your bow. Keep working with the loops until you are pleased with the shape.
9. Stitch down the center of the ribbon loop with needle and thread using a running stitch, which is a simple back and forth stitch. Pull the thread of the running stitch tight once you have stitched across the width of the ribbon. This gathers the center of your bow. Remove the straight pin.
10. Wrap the thread around the center of the bow to hold the gathers together. Tie the ends of the thread together and trim.
11. Use a dot of hot glue to affix your button to the center of the bow over the top of the thread. Use another dot of hot glue in the center of the bow in the back to attach the bow to an alligator clip.
