Build Fabric Bows With Trim
Fabric bows embellished with cute trims make adorable hair ornaments, home decor accents or even whimsical jewelry pieces. If you have a stash of random bits of trim, put them to work in fabric bows with trim for yourself, your children and friends. Make a simple velvet bow with a bit of gold cording or a whimsical and colorful bow with rick rack, ribbons and more. Go big with your fabric bow for a bold statement or use several small bows to accent a garment hemline.
Instructions
1. Cut a rectangle of fabric. Start with a 3-by-4 inch rectangle for a small bow, a 4-by-5 inch rectangle for a medium bow, or a 5-by-6 inch bow for a relatively large bow. Make your rectangle larger if you prefer a more dramatic fabric bow.
2. Stitch flat trims onto the fabric now, allowing them to hang slightly over the short ends of the fabric. Cover the fabric completely with trims or simply use them to accent your fabric. Use a bit of fabric glue if necessary to make it easier to sew trims into place.
3. Fold the fabric lengthwise. Sew from each end toward the center of the fabric rectangle, leaving approximately 1 1/2 inches open at the center of the rectangle
4. Press the seam open, centering it on one side of the fabric rectangle. Stitch each short end closed. Turn right side out, making sure the corners are fully turned. Press well.
5. Thread a hand sewing needle with a doubled strand of sewing thread or three strands of embroidery floss. Use a running stitch through the middle of your fabric bow to gather the rectangle into a bow.
6. Cut lengths of trim to match your finished bow length, slightly shorter or slightly longer. Stack the trims onto your bow. Clip into place with an alligator hair clip if necessary to aid in construction. Wrap embroidery floss securely around the center of the fabric hair bow and trim to create fabric bows with trim.
7. Cut a narrow strip of fabric in proportion with your fabric bow, approximately twice the desired finished width. Press each long edge in toward the center. Wrap this around the center of the fabric bow and sew together in the center back with doubled sewing thread and a sharp needle. Sew quite securely.
8. Use a strong all purpose adhesive to secure your fabric bow to a hair clip or sew it onto the clip if you prefer. Sew fabric bows onto home decoration projects or garments or glue them into place on gifts.
