Types Of Bows For Gift Wrapping

Your gift wrap will pop with the perfect bow.

When you've looked long and hard for the perfect gift, you want to make sure the package is just as special as the contents. After selecting occasion-appropriate gift wrap, you can really dress your gift up with a bow. Select one from the many varieties available for purchase, or create your own with ribbon or more unusual materials.

Pre-Made Bows

Gone are the days when looped-ribbon star bows were all you could buy. While these still-pretty standards are readily available in many sizes and colors, consumers have more to choose from now.

Pull bows store flat and take up a minimum of space. When you pull them, a perfect bow appears as if by magic. Pull bows are available in multiple colors and materials; usually they form a circular bow, but butterfly-shaped pull bows are also available.

Cascades of curled ribbon in many color combinations add a touch of whimsy to a gift box or bag.

Make Your Own Bows

Making your own bows guarantees that your gift will have a personal flair. What's more, making bows is usually more economical and can even be environmentally friendly.

Have some spare magazines lying around? Flip through your magazine until you find a colorful page that accents your chosen gift wrap well. Don't worry about the words and images; once your bow is created, all you'll see are the fantastic colors. Cut the page into strips and, using a brass brad as a fastener, loop the ends of each strip to form a star-shaped bow.

Wired ribbon, satin ribbon, tulle, and rafia are also perfect materials for making your own bow. These custom-made adornments will add a touch of class to your gift.

Exciting Ways to Complete a Gift

Instead of opting for more traditional bows, why not top your gift with something more creative? Match the bow to the contents of the package, the occasion or to the interests of the gift recipient.

For example, you may not want to actually give your father a tie for Father's Day, but it would be clever to cut a long strip of striped fabric and tie it to his gift in a crisp Windsor knot. (You may want to fold over the fabric and sew it to avoid frayed edges.) Or, for a gardening fanatic, trim off some perfect leaves from your garden, and secure them in a circle with some green wire. Then fasten a beautiful bloom in the center--roses, lilies or daisies would work well. For a young child's gift, use a jump rope or hair ribbon for a bow.
