Supplies To Make Hair Bows

Making hair bows for presents or profit is fun and easy to do.

Many stay-at-home parents are exploring the world of hair bows as a way to make extra income while being at home with their little ones. Parents of little girls are also taking an interest in making hair bows at home to avoid the cost of boutique bows. Whether you're making bows for yourself or a little princess in your life, or you're trying to add a little income for your family, a general supply list of hair bow supplies can get you started.

Ribbon

The many textures and patterns available means making unique hair bows is easy.

Ribbon is one of the most important components of a hair bow, and with the hundreds of options available it can be a daunting component. Choosing a few basic types of ribbon, like satin and grosgrain, and then selecting a small range of colors and patterns, will allow you to get started without making a huge investment. As you become more skilled or begin selling more bows, you can invest in specialty ribbons.

Clips

Barrette clips and alligator clips are the preferred styles for bow making. These can be purchased in bulk at hobby stores or beauty salon supply stores, and they come in a range of both sizes and finishes. For smaller bows, snap clips are often used and can be purchased at both specialty stores or stores like Wal-Mart.

Hot Glue

Hot glue is the best type of adhesive for finishing hair bows because the glue holds well, comes in a variety of temperatures and is often invisible when the bow is finished. Be sure to test high-temperature and low-temperature glues on a tiny bit of the ribbon you plan to use before making the bow so that you don't ruin the ribbon.

Hot glue guns come in several sizes, and can be cordless or electric. Start with a lower temperature gun, which minimizes (but does not eliminate) the risk of burns. This will also minimize the risk of melting more delicate ribbon.

Wire

Various types of wire can be used for making bows. Ribbon wire supplies both the ribbon and wire in one step, though often with limited patterns and colors. Floral wire is a frequent choice for bow construction because it is inexpensive and easily malleable. The use of different thicknesses of wire may require pliers or shears instead of basic scissors.

Floral wire can be found at hobby stores and craft stores, and can be a variety of thicknesses, or gauge sizes. Higher gauges are thinner wires, which means more flexibility with the material. You can often find the wires painted or covered in different colors. Start with a basic floral wire in a 24 to 26 gauge, and from there determine whether a thicker wire is needed for your purpose.
