Use fabric instead of the traditional ribbon to fashion a bow for a different look.
Most bows, whether for hair, wrapping a gift or adorning some other craft project, are fashioned from ribbon, but ribbon is not your only option for making bows. Construct bows from fabric material to use for any project you would use a ribbon bow. Make bows from leftover material from the construction of a garment for a perfectly matched hair accessory. Make a bow from cloth that coordinates with wrapping paper for a more upscale gift wrap embellishment.
Instructions
1. Measure with a ruler and cut with scissors a 4-inch by 5-inch piece of fabric.
2. Fold the fabric in half right sides facing each other, bringing the 4-inch edges together.
3. Sew the three open sides closed with a 1/2-inch seam allowance, leaving a 1-inch opening in the middle of the side opposite the folded edge.
4. Turn the piece right side out through the 1-inch opening.
5. Fold the raw edges along the 1-inch opening in 1/2 an inch. Iron the folded edges as well as the rest of the piece so it is a flat rectangle.
6. Measure and cut a 6-inch piece of dental floss. Wrap the dental floss widthwise around the center of the rectangle to form a bow with the fabric rectangle. Tie the two ends of the dental floss together to hold the gather.
7. Measure and cut a 2-inch piece of 3/8-inch-wide ribbon. Wrap the ribbon around the gathered center of the bow so the ends overlap in the back of the bow.
8. Secure the overlapping ends of ribbon with a dot of hot glue. Trim the ribbon if necessary.
