Accesories pull an outfit together.
Girls love dressing up. Whether they're 5 or 15, young ladies enjoy choosing and using jewelry and hair accessories to jazz up an outfit. Although jewelry may be complex and pricey, hair adornments are made of inexpensive materials such as ribbon, pony beads, and plastic gems. This makes producing and selling these items rather profitable. Even a casual crafter can create desirable pieces and make some money.
Instructions
Shaped Headbands
1. Keep a variety of ribbon on hand.
Decorate the base of a plain headband. You may spray paint the top of the headband, wrap the entire band in ribbon, or use glitter to add stripes. Let the width and style of the band dictate the method you use. Glitter will be more likely to wear off of a large area, and narrow headbands will take more time to wrap, for instance.
2. Attach beaded strands for a funky look.
Embellish the base. Glue adornments onto the headband you just decorated. Use fake flowers, charms, feathers, or plastic gems to add to your design. Consider placing decorations on the side of the band, above the ear. This makes bold pieces less cloying.
3. Always use spray paints and sealers in a well-ventilated area.
Seal the headband with acrylic spray. This will help protect glitter and glue. Allow it to dry overnight before selling.
Fabric Headbands
4. Check discount racks and scrap bins for a good deal on fabric.
Cut a 5x12 inch rectangle of jersey fabric in the color or pattern of your choice. Any fabric that stretches and retains its shape would be suitable for this project.
5. Fold the rectangle in half the long way so that the wrong side of the fabric is exposed. Sew along the long side of the piece, leaving the ends open.
6. Turn the fabric inside out. This will expose the correct side of the fabric. Rotate the tube of fabric so that the seam is in the center of the strip. Iron the fabric in this position.
7. Sew the ends of the headband together, making sure the seam is also on the wrong side of the headband. All seams will be facing inside.
8. Fabric headbands are quick and comfy, for everyday use.
Embellish the headband or leave it plain for a sporty look. Sew on large beads and charms for a secure hold. If attaching individual seed beads or glitter, use fabric glue.
Hairbows
9. Bows may be simple or embellished.
Tie ribbon, lace, or tulle into a bow and use hot glue to secure the knot. Consider gluing different bows on top of each other for a complex look. As your skill increases you may invest more time and effort into making elaborate bows with multiple layers.
10. Test the hair clip to make sure the clip opens and closes smoothly. If using ribbon, make sure the piece is long enough to secure the hair bow to the wearer.
11. Glue the bow to the hair clip or ribbon. Use a few stitches to secure the hold. You may add charms, strings of beads, or glitter to embellish the bow. If you use glitter or paint, be sure to seal the piece.
12. Sell your products to friends, family and neighbors. Price items based on materials used and time. Expect to earn 1-2 dollars per piece selling at reasonable prices. Use school, church, phone and referrals to get more customers. Make items by request to keep girls coming back for more. Consider participating at a swap meet, yard sale or fundraiser to spread the word about your products.
