Scarecrow Crafts For Young children To Create

Keep scarecrow crafts simple for young children.

Scarecrows have been used for hundreds of years by farmers to scare off birds and protect their crops. They are often characters in films and cartoons and the idea of scarecrows is fun, scary and fascinating to kids. There are many different crafts that can be made with scarecrows, but should be kept fairly basic for preschoolers.

Stick Scarecrow

Have kids make their own smaller version of a scarecrow to stick in a plant or the garden. Turn a paper bag upside down and draw a scarecrow face with markers. Make the expression scary and glue on two googly eyes. Have the kids scrunch up old newspaper pages to fill the inside of the bag. Take a stick or pole and insert until it is halfway into the scarecrow. Scrunch the end of the bag around the stick and tie with yarn. Glue some yellow straw on yarn to the top of the bag as hair and then place the stick in the garden.

Coloring

Print a scarecrow stencil or photocopy one from a book, and then lay out a selection of crayons, markers, and pencils. Let the kids decorate and color the scarecrow. You can even lay out additional objects like cotton balls and straw so that they can glue on hair and bow ties.

Paper Plate Scarecrow

Mix together some white and orange paint to make a peach shade, and have the kids paint the back of a paper plate. Let the plate dry and then draw faces for the scarecrow. Alternatively, have the kids glue on pieces of construction paper for the face. Have two blue circles for eyes, a red moon shaped smile for the lips, and a hat shape out of brown paper. Cut up some yellow paper into strips for the hair.

Puppet scarecrow

Use a wooden spoon to create a puppet scarecrow for the kids to play with all day. Cut out overalls and a shirt from colored construction paper or foam, and place on a table. Add colored markers so the kids can draw a face on the spoon, and then glue on the clothes. Make a collection of scarecrow puppets and try to have them all look slightly different.
