Children of all ages enjoy breaking the pinata open.
Children love having a pinata at birthday parties and other celebrations. Watching your friends try to hit a moving target provides almost as much enjoyment as scrambling for the spoils after someone breaks the pinata. You can purchase a pinata at some party stores, but the child may prefer to help build the pinata. Choose a simple shape such as a clown head for your pinata project.
Instructions
1. Blow up a large balloon and suspend it on a string by the balloon tie. Hang it at a height where you can easily reach the entire surface.
2. Tear newspaper into long, thin strips. Do the same thing with three to four sheets of typing paper.
3. Stir 1 part flour and 3 parts water in a bowl and add a sprinkling of salt. Stir until the papier mache mixture is smooth.
4. Dip a strip of newspaper into the mix and place the strip on the balloon. Smooth out all the wrinkles. Dip another piece of newspaper into the mix and place it next to the first. Continue layering the newspaper on the balloon until you have covered everything except a 3-inch circle around the balloon tie. Add a second layer of papier mache using the typing paper strips instead of the newspaper. Allow the papier mached balloon to fully dry while suspended
5. Hot-glue half a polystyrene or rubber ball to the center of the papier mache ball surface. Add a layer of typing paper strip papier mache over the ball to create your clown's nose. Paint the nose red and paint a red mouth under the nose. Paint cheeks, eyes and eyebrows around and over the nose.
6. Cut strips of tissue paper to make hair for your clown. Glue the strips all around the sides and the back of the clown face. Leave the 3-inch circle at the top of your clown head open and approximately a 1/2-inch rim around the circle.
7. Untie the balloon or pop it and remove it from the papier mache shell. Fill the shell through the 3-inch hole with small pieces of candy or toys.
8. Cut a 4-inch circle out of cardboard. Poke a hole in the center of the circle. Cut a 24-inch length of monofilament line and tie one end to a large paperclip. Thread the monofilament line through the hole and glue the circle over the opening. Glue tissue paper hair over the cardboard. Hot-glue a bow tie to the bottom of the shell underneath the mouth.
