Children's hair bows are big sellers at craft fairs and kids' boutiques, but they are also approachable crafts for working moms. These simple instructions will teach you make a fun balloon hair clip, a basic ribbon hair bow and small ribbon barrettes. Make a variety of hair bows to match your children's favorite outfits or try making some for your adult friends. You may add any creative touches to the basic directions to create personalized, themed hair bows for your child.
Instructions
Balloon Hair Clip
1. Open a metal hair bow clip. Lay the curved surface down on the table. Arrange your colored balloons in the order you want for the design.
2. Line the first balloon under the metal clip and pull the edges up. Tie the ends in a knot as close to the clip as possible. Do not leave slack between the knot and the clip. Slide the balloon knot to the end of the metal clip. Squirt a drop of hot glue on either side of the knot.
3. Alternate the direction of the next balloon so you have an end next to the full head. Tie the balloon in a knot and slide it next to the first one. Glue the knot to the metal clip. Continue for the remaining balloons, alternating the direction each time. Glue each one in place.
4. Allow the balloon hair bow to dry. Add glitter or fabric paint to the balloons if you want. Place the clip around a ponytail or section of hair and close the clip.
Single Large Bow Clip
5. Cut a piece of wide ribbon at least 18 inches long. Tie a simple knot in the center of the ribbon length. Make two bunny-ear-shaped loops about 4 inches high on either side of the knot. Wrap the right loop around the left loop and push it through the small hole made by wrapping.
6. Arrange the loops so they point up and the tails point down. Pull the loops tight to secure the knot. Cut the tails the desired length, about 5 inches. Prevent fraying by cutting the ends at a diagonal. Trim any dangling strings from the ribbon ends.
7. Open a metal clip and lay it with the curved side down. Squirt hot glue on the top of the clip. Press the back of the large bow into the hot glue. Hold until it sets and cools.
8. Wrap any visible ends of the metal clips with coordinating ribbon. Glue the ends to the clip so it does not unravel. Allow the clip to dry.
Small Ribbon Barrettes
9. Snap open the barrette. Cut about 12 inches of narrow ribbon. Hot glue one end of the ribbon to the top frame of the snap barrette at the widest end. Allow the glue to dry.
10. Wrap the length of the ribbon around the small frame to cover the glued end. Continue wrapping the ribbon around the barrette frame. Overlap the previous ribbon a little bit with each wrap. Add a drop of glue after every three wraps to secure the ribbon.
11. Continue wrapping until you have covered the entire barrette frame. Trim the end of the ribbon and glue it on the underside of the barrette.
12. Make a small bow from narrow or wide ribbon. Glue to the wide end of the barrette. You may also glue large plastic buttons or decorations to the wide end of the barrette.
13. Allow the glue to dry. Slide the clip into your hair. Snap it closed.
