Obtain A Crossbow Permit

Crossbows are commonly used to hunt deer.

Crossbows have been around for centuries. In the Middle Ages they were used by armies as a weapon against the enemy. While the principle of the crossbow is still the same, their design has changed significantly since that time. Crossbows are still constructed of a half-moon shaped frame. An arrow is loaded on it and then fired with a triggering mechanism. Today, they are used primarily for hunting. However, before you hit the open woods for a day of game hunting, check to make sure you do not need a permit in the state in which you are hunting.

Instructions

1. Determine if your state requires a crossbow license. As of January 2011, there are some states such as Alabama, Delaware, New York, and Oklahoma (among others) which allow the use of crossbows for hunting. Other states such as Connecticut or Massachusetts only allow crossbows for individuals with a handicap. See the Resources section below to determine if your state allows their use for hunting.

2. Contact the state Gaming Department. Contact the Gaming Department in the state where you wish to use the crossbow to obtain or download a crossbow application.

3. Fill out the crossbow application. Information required on the crossbow application will include things such as your name, address, phone number, Social Security Number, defining characteristics (weight, height, eye and hair color), and if you have a criminal record.

4. Receive approval from a doctor. Some states, such as Arizona, require that a doctor state that you have at least 90 percent disability in at least one arm. This is commonly found in states which only issue crossbow license to individuals who are physically impaired.

5. Return the application and pay the associated fees. The fee amount varies by state. Usually the license is good for one year, or one hunting season as defined by the state statutes.

6. Receive your crossbow permit. After your application is reviewed, you will receive the permit if you are accepted. This allows you to hunt game in accordance with state law, using your crossbow as a weapon.
