Fuzzball scrunchies imitate this shape but with different, fuzzier material.
Scrunchies were very popular in the 1980s and '90s, marketed as a hair accessory that wouldn't damage your hair and that was available in a myriad of colors and fabrics to match any outfit. While scrunchies seemed to disappear for a while, they appear to be coming back into style. Certain scrunchies--such as "fuzzball" scrunchies, made a from a soft, shiny, fuzzy material--are popular with young girls. Scrunchies, even "fuzzball" scrunchies, are easy to make, so you really shouldn't purchased over-pieced ones in boutiques and shops.
Instructions
1. Go to a fabric store and purchase a small amount of "fuzzball" fabric in your desired color. If the store does not refer to the fabric by this name, explain that you're looking for very glossy yet fuzzy, somewhat puffy fabric. You'll recognize it on sight.
2. Cut piece of fabric that is 10 inches long and 3 inches wide. Fold it in half, with the interior, unfuzzy side of the fabric showing, and sew the sides together. Turn it right side out, so that you have a tube of fuzzy fabric with the hem hidden on the inside.
3. Cut a small piece of elastic not longer than 5 inches. Insert the elastic through the fuzzy column. Make a loop of elastic by sewing the ends of the elastic together. The fuzzball fabric at this point should be bunched around the elastic.
4. Pull the ends of the fuzzball material together so that you cover the elastic completely. Sew the two ends of the fuzzball material together with a few small but tight stitches, using thread that matches the material.
