Balloons can be used to create fun and elegant wedding décor, and if you create the balloon art yourself, it can be an inexpensive way to add lots of color and excitement to both the ceremony and the reception. When you start to think creatively, there are lots of different ways you can utilize balloons---plain or personalized with your wedding information---to decorate for a wedding.
Arches
One of the most impressive balloon wedding decorations is the balloon arch. You can create balloon arches using single balloons all tied together at even lengths on a wire or string and then anchored to the floor at each end by a sandbag or something else heavy---and this kind of arch can be as long and as wide as you wish. You can also purchase special plastic strips for this purpose. This makes an attractive arch behind the head table at the dinner/reception or in front of the area where the bride and groom will be married if they will have an outdoor ceremony. For this type of arch, inflate the balloons with helium so the balloons naturally float upward.
You can create another type of balloon arch using an inexpensive metal arch. This one is a fuller arch and utilizes many more balloons tied to the metal framework of the arch with shorter pieces of string or wire to create a thick, full arch. For this design, inflate the balloons with air, not helium.
In either design, you can use all the same color, shape and size balloons for a uniform appearance, or you may wish to combine two or more colors and/or sizes of balloons for a more colorful appearance. You can arrange the balloons randomly or use a strategy to create spirals of color. If you're creative, you can even design a rainbow.
Walkways
At a church wedding, you can anchor balloons on ribbons to the end of pews, either singly or in small groups. Use helium to fill these balloons so they float, and use long ribbons so guests can still see the processional, ceremony and recessional without obscuring their view.
For an outdoor wedding, or leading up to the door of the reception area or tent, groups of balloons on long ribbons make a beautiful walkway for the bride and groom or guests to walk through. Inflate balloons with helium, tie them to stakes in the grass or tie them to the base of a heavy ornate flower pot with live or silk blossoms. For an evening wedding, you could stake the balloons to small solar garden lights staked into the ground for an elegant ambiance.
Centerpieces
Balloon bouquets also make beautiful centerpieces for decorating tables at the wedding. Use ribbons of varying lengths to tie a group of three or more balloons together, tie them to a balloon weight---or make one of your own by wrapping any heavy object in shiny mylar---and simply place them on the tables where desired.
More Ideas
For outdoor weddings, you can also add a festive flair by tying balloons to trees, pillars on porches, and the stakes on the tent or awning. Indoors, balloons can be tied to the backs of chairs, pillars or support beams, and anything else that is convenient. You can also float dozens of loose helium-filled balloons in the dance hall to create a balloon cloud overhead.
