Ask a friend to help with final bow tie adjustments.
Hand-knotted bow ties create an elegant look for men and remain standard for formal wear. But some notable wearers, including Winston Churchill, Liberace and Pee-Wee Herman, have donned them as daytime attire too. Black-tie event etiquette suggests bow ties for men, usually with a tuxedo. Less common white-tie events require bow ties. The same knot can be used for both standard bow ties and the larger butterfly ones.
Instructions
1. Use small stickers to keep the bow-tie ends organized as you tie them.
Write A on one sticker and B on the other. Flip your shirt collar up and stand facing a mirror. Drape the bow tie around your neck so both ends hang down on your chest.
2. Place the sticker marked A on the left side of the tie and B on the right side. Both stickers should face out and be located at the end of the tie so you can see them easily. Adjust the tie so that the A end hangs about 2 inches lower than the B end.
3. Take the A end of the tie and place it over the B side about half way up. Tuck A under B and bring it up towards your throat. This forms the initial part of the knot. The A sticker should now be facing away from the mirror.
4. Fold the B end away from you from the left side of your chest towards the right. The B end should sit horizontally in the middle of your body, looking like one half of the bow. The B sticker should now be facing towards you, away from the mirror.
5. Drop the A end of the tie so that it hangs downwards. The A end should bisect the horizontal half bow formed by the B end. The A sticker should now be facing out once again.
6. Fold the A end back upwards towards your left shoulder but fold the end of A back down on itself so that the sticker remains facing away from you. With the A end doubled-back on itself, take hold of the uppermost fold. Push this fold sideways from left to right into the hole that lies in front of the initial knot but behind the B end half-bow.
7. Pull on each end to tighten the bow a little. Remove the stickers and make final adjustments.
