Create A Loopy Bow

Decorative bows command attention to packages, flip flops or hair styles. Make a loopy bow to coordinate with any wardrobe or to enhance any package using decorative ribbon strands. The technique is the same for any type of ribbon; the width and length of the ribbons alters the bow design. Hot glue a fabric ribbon loopy bow a barrette form to make a hair bow or to the top of your flip flips for added style. Tape a paper ribbon loopy bow to the top of a package with double sided tape.

Instructions

1. Cut six 9-inch strands of your choice or ribbon. The widest loops on the bow will be 3 inches long. Adjust the length of the strand to make longer or shorter loops. Cut four 8-inch strands of the same width of ribbon. Cut four 7-inch strands of the same width of ribbon. Each length of ribbon adds a new layer to the loopy bow.

2. Spray the ends of fabric ribbon with no-fray spray. Let the spray dry according to the manufacturer's directions. Omit this step if you are using a paper ribbon.

3. Stack the six 9-inch ribbon strands in a vertical row. If you are using printed ribbon, place the print side down.

4. Thread a needle with 2-feet of thread that matches the ribbon. Bring the ends of the thread together and tie a knot at the end.

5. Fold the stacked ribbons in the center to form a loop. Hold the ribbons together at the base of the loop. Insert half of the threaded needle through the curve of the loop. Spread the ribbons apart evenly around the needle.

6. Clip a double pronged alligator clip to the ribbon loop so that the needle protrudes between the two prongs on the clip. The clip helps to hold the ribbon in place as you stitch the center.

7. Bring up one end of the top ribbon, center it over the needle and then slide it onto the needle. This is the first loop for the bow. Bring up the other end of the same ribbon, center it onto the needle and slide it down to meet the first. Follow the process to add each end of each ribbon onto the needle.

8. Pull the needle through all of the ribbon strands to the knot at the end of the thread. Follow the process to stack the 8-inch strands and add them to the loopy bow. Follow the same process to stack and add the 7-inch strands to the bow.

9. After all three ribbon stacks are together, insert the needle back down through the center of the ribbons. Tie the ends of the thread together on the backside of the bow. Cut the excess ribbon.

10. Hot glue a decorative button or rhinestone to the center of the loopy bow to hide the stitch.
