Loopy hairbows are a vibrant, playful way to refashion a plain barrette.
Loopy hair bows are festive and whimsical accessories. They are made with bunches of bright, colorful ribbons looped together to create a vibrant hair piece. These bundles of ribbons can be in any combination of colors and vary in width and density. A loopy hair bow is an ideal way to refashion an old hair clip.
Instructions
1. Take the hair clip apart so that the main body is separate from the other clip parts. This step will make it easier to attach the ribbon to it.
2. Apply a touch of clear nail polish to both ends of all the cut ribbon segments. Once the nail polish has dried, place all of the ribbons directly on top of each other in a stack. Sew all of the ends of the ribbons together on one end so that they remain neatly stacked. Do not cut the thread at this point.
3. Place the sewn end of the bundle of ribbons on top of the hair clip directly over the small hole at one end. Push the needle through the small hole at the end of the clip to attach the ribbon ends to the hair clip. Repeat this attachment step a couple of times for a secure hold. You should now have a barrette with a long tail of ribbons attached to it.
4. Wrap the thread around the ribbons and the barrette several times to secure in place. You will not need to use the needle again until step 8, when you reach the opposite end of the barrette. You will be wrapping the thread around the barrette to hold successive ribbon loops in place until you reach the end of the barrette body.
5. Create a loop with the stack of ribbons using about 5" of ribbon. Use slightly more or less ribbon to account for the number of ribbons you have and the amount of space on the barrette. The whole hair piece should be covered with ribbon.
6. Wrap the thread around the base of the loop and the barrette a few times, securing the loop very close to the end where you previously secured the ribbons. The barrette will now have one vertical loop sticking up from the body of the barrette.
7. Repeat step 6, going along the main body of the clip until all of the ribbon is used up. Make each successive loop the same size as the first, at about 5", using even amounts of ribbon for each loop. Once you reach the end of the barrette you will have about 5-8 eight tall loops made from the stack of ribbons sitting closely together vertically.
8. Sew the final ends of the ribbon in place through the small hole at the other end of the barrette, like in Step 3, and cut off the thread.
9. Fan out the ribbon loops so every layer of ribbon is visible. Now the vertical loops will be fanned out horizontally in order to see each layer of ribbon.
10. Reassemble the hair clip with the spring in the bottom and the loopy hair bow is complete.
