Make hair bows shaped like butterflies with a bit of ribbon.
Bug-shaped hair bows offer a different twist on traditional bows. Use ribbon of the same color as the bug you choose, such as red ribbon for ladybugs and yellow ribbon for bees. Glue the bug-shaped hair bows to hair clips so they are easy to put in your hair, or attach them to gift wrap for added decoration.
Instructions
Butterfly Hair Bows
1. Measure and cut wings for your butterfly; cut one piece of ribbon 13 1/2 inches long.
2. Mark 1/4 inch from one end of the ribbon, then 2 3/4 inches, 5 1/2 inches, 9 1/4 inches and 13 inches from the end. Label these marks "1," "2," "3," "4" and "5" consecutively, beginning with the 1/4-inch mark. Place your marks on the side of the ribbon that will be hidden.
3. Line up mark 2 over mark 1 by creating a loop and placing the two numbers flat against each other. Keep the ribbon pinched so it doesn't slip out of place.
4. Loop the ribbon around to place mark 3 over the top of mark 2. You now have what resembles a bow or butterfly-wing shape. Again, keep the ribbon pinched. Use a paper clip or hair clip to hold it together as an alternative.
5. Create smaller loops for the smaller butterfly wings by placing mark 4 over mark 3. Next, so the tail doesn't show, make a loop and place mark 5 against mark 1 on the backside. This means mark 1 is sandwiched between mark 2 on one side and mark 5 on the other.
6. Sew the ribbon together where the marks overlap with a few simple stitches.
7. Cut a piece of ribbon that is the same length as your hair clip, but add 1/2 inch. Cut colored wire for short antennae, about 4 inches long. Bend the wire into a "U" shape, and place the bottom of the "U" at one end of the ribbon. Dab glue on the wire and ribbon and fold it back on itself to create a 1/4-inch head with the "U" shaped wire tucked neatly inside. The ribbon should now fit on the hair clip perfectly, with the head of the butterfly at one end.
8. Glue the wings of the butterfly to the hair clip first, and then glue the body on top to cover the overlapping ribbon. Allow it to dry, and then bend the antennae out and away from the head to give them the right shape.
Ladybug Hair Bows
9. Cut red ribbon 4 inches long to create the body of the ladybug. Loop the ribbon so the two ends touch each other, and then press them down flat against a surface. The two ends come together to create a flat point while the back of the loop stands up. Glue these two ends together.
10. Cut a second piece of red ribbon 3 inches long. Create another loop, press the two ends together against a flat surface and glue. Place this smaller loop inside the larger loop once the glue dries, and then glue the ends of both loops together.
11. Cut a piece of black ribbon 1 inch long. Put one drop of glue where the loop ends are glued together, where the head of the lady bug will be. Place the black ribbon on top of the two loop ends to create the head. Fold the black ribbon around to the underside of the loop ends and secure it with glue. The ladybug now has a pointed, black head.
12. Glue a piece of green ribbon to a hair clip so it fits perfectly. Bend colored wire in a "U" shape to create antennae for the ladybug, and glue them to the green ribbon at one end. Glue the body of the ladybug to the green ribbon, with its head covering where the antennae are attached.
13. Allow it to dry before placing it in your hair.
