Tame Hair Tufts That Stick Staight Out
Hair tufts that are unruly and often stick straight out are called cowlicks. The most famous cowlick in popular culture was probably the one belonging to Alfalfa in the show "Our Gang" from the 1930's. A cowlick occurs when hair turns as it grows, and hair from one given area grows erratically in different directions. Most cowlicks grow at the crown of the head, although some flourish at the front of the hairline or nape of the neck. You can manage most cowlicks on your own.
Instructions
1. Use a strong gel, mousse, or hair pomade. Start with just a small pea-sized or quarter-sized amount in your hand, as these products tend to be quite strong, and apply to the roots of the unruly tuft. Work the product through to the ends, while guiding the cowlick in a more desired direction.
2. Grow hair long to conceal cowlicks that occur at the nape of your neck. Your long hair will weigh down the unruly strands, eliminating its ability to stick straight out. Cutting your hair short will also allow the cowlick to lay flat against the back of your neck.
3. Visit a talented hair stylist. A talented hair stylist can create a hairstyle that incorporates the cowlick and thus, camouflage it. For example, for cowlicks at the front of the hairline, a good stylist will be able to cut and shape them into bangs framing your face.
4. Get electrolysis. Electrolysis removes hair by delivering a mild electric current at the root. For unruly tufts of hair, it is sometimes permanent; other times, the cowlick eventually grows back and requires more treatments. Treatments range from around $65 to $100.
