Accessorize Men's Suits
There are as many ways to accessorize men's suits as there are men to wear the accessories. Bringing some personal style into the workplace can make you feel and look more confident. Remember, belts are optional but should not look like functional jewelry. Avoid shiny or studded belts in professional attire.
Instructions
1. Choose a color scheme. Suits and accessories don't have to be all the same color, nor must they be different shades of the same color. A color scheme might include two colors that go well together, like a brown suit with a green shirt. Next, choose an accent color, such as tan. A brown suit could be worn with a green shirt and a tan tie, for example. If you can't choose or are colorblind, ask a sales consultant what looks good.
2. Pick a tie with care. Avoid the following for formal occasions: cartoon character ties, joke ties, ties with prints (such as American flags) and laughably small ties. The tie is an important choice and generally is not the same color as the suit, although it can be if worn with a coordinated shirt. According to "GQ" magazine's Style Guy, Glenn O'Brien, width is important. The rule of thumb for tie width is that the widest point of the tie should equal the lapel at its widest point.
3. Choose your socks and shoes carefully. According to Glenn O'Brien, your socks and shoes do not have to be the same color, nor do they have to match either your pants or your shirt. Remember, a color scheme, not just one color, is a successful use of color coordination. O'Brien says your socks can match any part of your suit. He does advise that brown shoes are fine with navy blue suits, but black is better for formal attire.
4. Decide if you want a tie clip and cuff links. Cuff links and tie clips are basic suit accessories for men. Their basic function is to keep your suit in proper alignment. Cuff links dress up the cuff and hold its shape. Tie clips keep your tie from slipping around. Neither of these accessories are necessary, but they make a nice touch. They do not have to be a matching set or made of the same material, but make sure the tip clip and cuff links look good together. Avoid, for instance, bright gold cuff links with a dull metal tie clip if you want these accessories to match.
5. Limit accessory pieces to five or less. Also, jewelry pieces should be kept to a minimum (wedding rings count as jewelry) for business attire. There is such a thing as being too flashy. If you don't want your shiny watch glaring in your business partners' eyes, try switching to a pocket watch. Monogrammed bracelets and leather watches are classic men's jewelry choices.
