Pinwheel hair bows add color and cuteness to any hairdo.
You can find pinwheel hair bows at a variety of beauty supply stores, hair salons and boutiques. Although adorable, they can tend to be a little on the pricey side. Instead of spending your money to purchase just one hair bow, use that money to purchase the supplies needed to make several hair bows. Making the pinwheel hair bow is easy, inexpensive and takes about 30 minutes to complete.
Instructions
1. Lay your 1 1/2-inch ribbon out on a flat surface. Place a measure tape or yard stick on top of the ribbon. Cut your ribbon with a pair of scissors at 23 inches.
2. Fold 4 inches of the ribbon over to make your first loop. Ensure that the longer ribbon tail is facing you (the side you just folded facing away).
3. Pinch the middle of the loop (halfway between the shorter ribbon end and the ribbon fold) using your thumb and index to keep the first bow loop in place. You are going to be making several loops to form the pinwheel, so keeping the loops "pinched" will make sure they keep their shape.
4. Pull the longer ribbon tail (the one facing you) up to form a loop at the bottom of the ribbon. Secure the loops by pinching them. Pull the tail back down to complete the second loop. Continue, pinching the loops between your fingers to keep them in place. The ribbon "loops" should be slightly overlapping, similar to a serpentine.
5. Pull the ribbon tail back up to finish the bow's shape. The bow will have two tails. The first tail is the 4 inches of ribbon that was folded over in Step 2, which will be facing down. The second tail is the end ribbon that was pulled up to finish the bow's shape in this current step. Cut any excess ribbon from the second tail so that it is 4 inches long as well.
6. Pinch the center of the ribbon to fold the middle into a crease. Don't be surprised if it takes your several times to get a nice crease.
7. Hold the center of the ribbon in your nondominant hand. Wrap your fishing line around the center of the bow and tie it into a tight knot. Cut off the excess line's ends. Place the bow onto a flat surface. To ensure the fishing line keeps the bow together tightly, tie the fishing line around the bow again, tying it off into a tight knot. Cut off any excess ends.
8. Adjust your loops to ensure they are "puffed" out and look perfect. Cut the ribbon tails with a pair of scissors to ensure they're even.
9. Run the flame from a lighter---quickly---over the ends of the ribbon. The heat seal from the flame will prevent the ribbon from fraying.
10. Open your alligator hair clip. Slide the bottom of the clip through the fishing lines.
11. Lay the 7/8-inch ribbon onto a flat surface. Place a measuring tape or ruler on top of the ribbon and cut it at 11 inches.
12. Tie the smaller ribbon into a regular knot. Ensure that the knot is in the middle of the ribbon. Adjust the tails so that they lay flat coming out from the knot.
13. Apply a dot (about the size of a pea) of hot glue onto the very center of the front of the hair bow. Place the knot of the smaller ribbon directly on top of the glue. Press the knot down to adhere. Allow it set for five minutes.
14. Hold the alligator clip open. Apply a pea-sized dot of glue to the middle of the inside of the clip. Fold one ribbon tail (from the knotted ribbon) over to the back of the bow. Hold the tail down onto the dot of the glue. Cut off the excess ribbon. Now, place a dot of glue onto the top of the ribbon just glued down. Fold the second tail over, adhering it to the first ribbon, and cut off the excess ribbon.
15. Run the flame from the lighter over the ends of the ribbon tails on the underside of the hair bow. Although they will not be seen, it's best to ensure they do not fray.
