Dress For Any Sales Job

Your clothing, and the way you present yourself in a sales job, is the first impression you give your clients. You want that first impression to be positive, one that exudes confidence and expertise. Along with the way you dress, your personal appearance -- including your hair, skin, nails, and even your teeth -- should be well maintained.

Instructions

Women

1. Wear a tailored pant or skirt suit in blue, black or brown, to provide a base to your wardrobe. Skirts should reach at least your knees and your pants should be tailored so that the hems do not drag the ground. Your suits should always be pressed.

2. Select a tailored shirt, with a modest neckline, as befits business clothing. Skirts should not be too short, or have dramatic slits. You can express your individuality through color, but the cut of your garments should be conservative.

3. Wear shoes with a polished look, but be sure that they're also comfortable. If your sales job requires you to stay on your feet, you should consider low heels or flats instead of high heels.

4. Pull your hair away from your face. Showing your eyes and your expression helps you build rapport with your clients. If you have long hair, find a way to secure it so that you're not tempted to fiddle with it while you're speaking with clients.

5. Have your nails professionally manicured, with toned-down nail polish. If professional manicures are not in your budget, trim your nails and paint them with clear polish. The underside of your nails should be clean at all times.

Men

6. Select tailored, pressed suits in black or dark blue. Whether you select double or single breasted suit jackets depends on what you feel looks best on you. Choose different fabrics depending on the weather. You will want cooler fabrics, such as cotton, during the summer, and warmer fabrics, such as wool, during the winter months.

7. Purchase dress shirts in a variety of colors. Have your shirts tailored to best fit you in the arm length and shoulder. Add cuff links to your shirt cuffs to add polish to your look when you're not wearing a jacket.

8. Place collar stiffeners in your shirt collar. These are small slivers of plastic that fit in the edge of your shirt collar, to keep it looking crisp. Wear a white undershirt so your shirt does not show sweat stains.

9. Choose ties that coordinate with your shirt and suit. Use your tie to inject some personality into your wardrobe, but avoid clip-on or bow ties. A tie clip is helpful, if you work around machinery that could catch your tie. The tie clip fastens your tie to your shirt about halfway down and adds a decorative touch to your wardrobe.

10. Select matching shoes and belt. Wingtip dress shoes add a level of elegance to a suit, but any well-fitting dress shoe will suffice. If you are on your feet for the majority of your work day, purchase shoes with extra support, or purchase shoe inserts from your local drug store, to make standing more comfortable.

11. Keep your hair trimmed every two to three weeks. Some men can wait longer, depending on how fast their hair grows. Men's nails should also be professionally manicured or kept trimmed short, and should be clean underneath at all times.
