With use, the bow hair of a violin, cello or other stringed instrument picks up dirt and grime. This not only discolors the bow hair, but reduces its ability to grab the strings. The result is faint sound, dead spots on the bow or no sound at all. Fortunately, it's easy to clean bow hair with basic household supplies. Learn clean bow hair correctly to keep your bow performing well and prevent the need for frequent rehairing.
Instructions
1. Remove the screw at the end of the bow. Turn it counter-clockwise until it comes off. Carefully remove the frog from the stick, taking care not to let the bow hairs twist or tangle. Place the screw somewhere safe so it doesn't roll away.
2. Secure the stick so it won't move as you clean the bow hairs. One method is to sit and hold the stick between your knees. Another is to place the stick in a box that's as high as the stick and leave the hairs hanging out of the box.
3. Pour 1/4 cup denatured alcohol into a small bowl. Dip a white cloth into the denatured alcohol. Hold the frog in one hand and the cloth in the other. Gently run the cloth up and down the bow hairs until they appear clean. Dip a clean part of the cloth in alcohol and wipe the hairs again to rinse them.
4. Blot the hairs dry with a paper towel or tissue. Wrap the paper around the hairs and gently squeeze out any remaining denatured alcohol. Work your way down the bow, taking care not to pull or twist the hairs.
5. Let the bow hairs air dry for at least an hour before you reattach the frog. Position the bow so the hairs don't touch the stick. Do this by hanging the bow over the edge of a table or over a chair back, or by placing the stick in a box with the hairs draped outside the box.
