make hair bows for girls
Hair bows for little girls can be a great gift at baby showers and little girl birthday parties. It is simple to make a bow with the proper materials and a little practice at folding the bow. While there are many different types of hair bows available, a simple hair bow can be very pretty and with the variety of ribbon available at the store, you can make a bow to match each outfit that a little girl owns.
Instructions
1. Cut about 30 inches of ribbon. The type of ribbon you use is up to you, but smaller ribbon--up to about 7/8 inch wide--is better for toddler girls, as this size will not overwhelm the child's head. You should cut the end of the ribbon at a diagonal line.
2. Prepare the hot glue gun. This needs to be hot and ready to go, so plug it in early.
3. Tie the ribbon into a bow shape. Make about a 5-inch loop with one end of the ribbon and hold the ribbon where the two pieces cross. There should be about a 1-inch tail on one end of the ribbon, with the remaining ribbon hanging loose.
Pull enough ribbon up to make a matching loop opposite the first loop, crossing at the same point. Continue to make loops until you have two matching loops on each side, to look like a basic hair bow. Continue to hold the center tightly.
4. Hot glue the ribbon together in the center. You should put a small amount of glue between each overlapping piece of ribbon in the very center where you have been holding the bow together.
5. Sew the bow together. Sewing the bow through the center where you glued the ribbon together will help the bow remain secure and last longer. After sewing through all of the layers a couple of times, wrap the thread around the middle several times and pull the bow tight. Once it is as tight as you want it to be, sew through the layers again and tie off your thread.
6. Finish the middle of the hair bow with a couple of inches of 1/2- or 3/8-nch wide ribbon. You can use either the same color or a complementary color ribbon. Tie a small knot in the ribbon and glue it to the front of the bow to give it a nice finished look; then pull the ribbon tightly around and glue it in place. Be careful not to glue the ribbon down in the very back so that the clip can slide through. If this is too difficult, go ahead and glue it down in the back, and you can simply glue the clip on.
7. Attach the alligator clip to the bow. An alligator clip is one type of hair clip you can use for a hair bow. Any kind of clip you can find and wish to use should work fine as long as you attach it securely. If you left space in the back to slip the clip through, add a dab of glue on the clip and put it in place. If you were not able to leave a space, simply glue the clip to the bow as best you can, so that it will remain secure.
