Use red roses for a Valentine's Day wedding reception.
Celebrate your love with all your friends and family members as you schedule your wedding reception on Valentine's Day. Known as the holiday of romance, February 14 lends itself to a standard color theme of red, white, pink and hearts. Incorporate this theme in your decorations, centerpieces, wedding cake and reception location.
Location
Choose a romantic location for your reception, such as an iconic hotel, historic home or bed and breakfast. The addition of a roaring fireplace, soft comfortable sofas and discreet corners lend a romantic atmosphere and intimacy to the reception area. Designate one large central area as the dance floor, with a DJ playing the top romantic songs from the past three decades, while tables set for two combined with larger tables of six or eight sprinkle the corners of the room. A formal dining area for the meal allows for a transition between the food and the entertainment areas.
Decorations
Hearts are a natural theme for a Valentine's Day wedding reception. Order heart-shaped invitations and RSVP cards in white linen paper with the details written in red lettering. Carry the heart shape through to the table place cards, the menu and the guest book. Purchase tablecloths, table runners, napkins and tulle in either solid red, white, pink or a pattern material. A red table cloth placed over a pink one creates an unusual design, especially with a patterned table runner and pink napkins. Alternate the color of the bows on the chair backs in red, pink and white, while using white tulle or white lace over a solid red table cloth for the dessert and gifts tables.
Centerpiece
Mixtures of red and white roses set in a clear crystal vase indicate a traditional design. Get creative instead, as you stamp tiny heart outlines on three clear hurricane glasses per table and fill them with candy hearts, chocolate covered hearts and wrapped chocolate-covered cherries. Put small bowls and a large scooper next to the centerpiece, along with a bowl of heart shaped lollipops. Another option for a centerpiece includes heart-shaped boxes stacked into three layers with red candles on the bottom layer, white candles in the middle layer and pink candles on the top layer. Sprinkle cut glass beads of incandescent red, pink and white on mirrors to catch and reflect the light glow.
Food
Follow the romance theme by having multi-colored heart designs piped on your wedding cake to indicate love, rather than use the traditional flower design, while you insert strawberries or cherries as the filling. Consider aphrodisiacs, such as an oyster bar, caviar or tomatoes with mozzarella and basil served as an appetizer or buffet style prior to a sit-down formal meal. Desserts you might want to add to the meal include a chocolate fountain or chocolate covered strawberries, chocolate covered bananas or pieces of gourmet chocolate. Drinks may be a chocolate martini or a pink cosmopolitan.
