Create A Cheap Fabric Banner

Banners are used as decoration at events or parties and are made out of plastic, paper or fabric. Plastic or paper banners tend to get thrown away after one use, which is expensive and not very environmentally friendly. Making your own fabric banner is a great way of using up scraps of different fabrics left over from other projects, as well as creating a cheap banner than can be used again and again.

Instructions

1. Gather a selection of different pieces of fabric. If you don't have big enough scraps, buying fat quarters from your local fabric shop will mean you can purchase a small amount of a number of different fabrics.

2. Draw an isosceles triangle that measures 8 inches on the two longer sides and 6 inches across the top shorter side on a piece of card. Cut this triangle out. This will become your banner template.

3. Place the template on the wrong side of your fabric. Draw around it. Cut out this triangle. Repeat this step one more time. You should have two fabric triangles.

4. Iron the two triangles flat. Match up the edges and pin them right sides together.

5. Sew along the two longer triangle sides a 1/4 inch in from the edge. On the shorter side, sew 1 1/4 inches in from each triangle point. Leave a 2- to 3-inch gap in the middle of the top shorter side of the triangle. Cut away excess fabric on the corners of the triangle.

6. Use the gap in the top of the triangle to turn it right side out. Tuck in any raw edges along the top opening. Press the triangle flat.

7. Sew a topstitch along all three sides of the triangle 1/4 inch from the edge. This completes your first banner piece.

8. Repeat Steps 3 to 7 until you have made 13 banner pieces.

9. Iron the bias tape in half. The edges of the bias tape should be inside the fold. On both ends of the bias tape, fold 1/2 inch of the bias tape onto itself. Fold this 1/2 inch over on top of itself again. Pin and sew each end in place.

10. Place the top edge of your first triangle inside the fold of the bias tape directly after the sewn end on the left hand side of the tape. Make sure the top of your triangle is flush with the top of the bias tape. Pin this triangle in place.

11. Measure 6 inches along the tape from the top right corner of your first triangle. Place the top edge of triangle two inside the bias tape and pin in place. Repeat this process working from left to right along the bias tape until all 13 triangles are pinned in place.

12. Use a running stitch to sew all the way along bottom edge of the bias tape. This secures the triangles in place.

13. Sew a loop of ribbon onto each end of the banner so it can be hung up easily.
