The price tag of hair accessories for girls tends to rise whenever color, beads or unique accents are added. Luckily, with a few craft supplies and some creativity, you can create your own custom hair accessories for girls at home. From brightly colored spring clips to shiny scrunchies, these crafts make an exciting activity for pre-teens and teenagers, and are an economical way to decorate a variety of hairstyles.
Instructions
1. Create a beaded spring clip. Spread hot glue in thin horizontal strips on the top of the hair clip using the tip of the hot glue gun. Skewer the beads with a straight pin and place them snugly beside each other in a row. Repeat the process until the clip is fully beaded.
2. Fashion decorative ponytail holders. Take basic cloth hair elastics and hot glue two pompoms on the band next to each other to add interest. Draw a wavy line or polka dots onto the rest of the band with a silver or gold permanent marker.
3. Make pearled hair combs. Cut a length of faux pearl string equal to the top of the comb. Use the hot glue gun to glue the pearls onto the comb's top. Wrap thin wire around the top of the comb in a vertical motion to secure the pearls in place.
4. Add color to bobby pins. Use your favorite nail polishes to paint stripes on the top prong of bobby pins. Place hot glue on the straight side of the bobby pin and thread beads into place for a reversible look.
5. Decoupage a collaged hair barrette. Cut small items out of magazines with nail scissors and place them in a business envelope. Use a paintbrush to coat the barrette's top in a thin layer of decoupage. Arrange the magazine cutouts on the barrette's surface, apply another thin coat of decoupage to glaze and allow it to dry overnight.
6. Make a shiny scrunchie. Cut a piece of satin or velvet 18 inches long and 2 1/2 inches wide. Join the long sides of the fabric together on the wrong side to form a tube and sew along the hem. Turn the fabric tube inside out and thread a 6-inch length of elastic through the tube. Pull the ends of the elastic and sew them together, scrunching the fabric as you go. Tuck one end of the fabric tube into the other side and sew along the outside to join them.
